In need of some Help and Advice please…

Hey,

I’m hoping that I will be able to get some help and advice from everyone here on the Spectra forums. What I want to do is buy my Fiancée some really nice cosmetics for her birthday next month but being the usual guy it’s a little out of my comfort zone and once I started looking at all the different options of brushes, kits, pallets and colour choices I realised that I’m in over my head.

I’m looking to budget around £100 to put together a makeup kit for her which I know isn’t a lot but I’m hoping that I will be able to get something nice for that amount of money.

I guess I don’t really know what other information you guys need so I will just leave things like this for now and if you need any other info then please just ask :)

Hope you can help me,
/Steve

Do you know her preferred brand of makeup and what types she usually wears (foundation, eyeshadow, blush, etc.)

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, I've had a quick look through her makeup draw and aside from a few odds and ends most of her stuff is Bare Minerals, MAC, Urban Decay and YSL.

I would go to the MAC counter and tell them what you are looking for and see if they can put a kit together. If all else fails, most of us MAC addicts would love a gift card to buy all of the products we love.

You can buy her a palette so she can choose her own eyeshadows from MAC.
You could ask the sales associate to help you choose a set of brushes from MAC, and get her the essentials.

It would be hard to match her for foundation, etc. without her being there, so focus on brushes or a palette she can fill herself or stick to colors you know she likes.

You could always purchase from maccosmetics.com directly... but then you would be running the risk of returning through the mail if she isn't happy with the items. There may be a MAC counter inside a department store near you... Try Macy's, Saks, and Nordstroms.

I would go out of the permanent range altogether to avoid re-purchasing her something she already has, especially if she has a lot of MAC or other brands. Check out some of the brand new Limited Edition Collections that are out now (and releasing in the next few weeks). You won't run the risk of her already owning the products, and she will probably be excited to try out the new things she may have even had on a wish list herself! The "Naturally Collection" from MAC (just released recently) would be nice since there is a nice range of neutrals anyone could appreciate and get lots of use out of. There are some gorgeous "pop of color" Mineralized Blushes that have everyone going gaga and a beautiful range of "not everyday neutral" Mineralized Eyeshadows! If you go the "Mineralized Eyeshadow" route, purchase her a bottle of MAC's Fix+ to go along with them... she can use the Fix+ to "foil" the eyeshadows and make them more vibrant! A travel sized bottle is only $10! DO call ahead and check availability, as some of these items are sold out online and getting harder and harder to find at MAC counters.

Urban Decay JUST recently released a new palette called NAKED2. She may already have the first Naked Palette, but this new one has a new range of 12 neutral colored eyeshadows she could add to her collection plus a mini lipgloss AND dual sided brush! At only $50, it's a steal! And that STILL leaves you with $50 to spend! That item is available at Sephora and thru Urban Decay's website.

Last idea... sigmabeauty.com has 3 great eyeshadow palettes that are a super value! There is "Bare" which are your basic neutrals, "Flare" which has greens, purples, beiges, and "Dare" has vibrant pink, oranges, yellow, etc. Each is only $35.00 for the 8 shadow palette and dual ended eyeshadow brush.

I would stay away from any nude lipsticks (since those can be tricky) and anything super unique (ie. bright, bold, glittery, etc.), since most of those things are all personal preference.

Hope some of this helps! And I MUST commend you on your gift idea... especially since you obviously are going out of your way to make sure it is special and something she will enjoy! I'm sure no matter what you choose, she will be appreciative of your thoughtfulness! Don't get too stressed out over it. Your lady clearly LOVES makeup, and her new goodies will be a surprise that she will surely be excited about!

Hey,

Thanks for the replies :)

I live in the UK and from what I've found it seems like most of the MAC counters are located in either London, Airports or other large cities. I've found a counter in a department store that's in a shopping complex about an hours drive from where I live so I think I will drive up there this afternoon and see what I can put together with the help of the girls on the counter. Failing that I might just order her the 15 slot palette with a brush or two, buy her one eye shadow to go in it and the put her some money on a gift card with an attached message letting her know I want her to fill it with things that will make her happy just like The way she has filled me with happiness knowing I get to wake up everyday beside her.

Also does anyone know if they offer any type of gift wrapping at the MAC counters because wrapping stuff isn't my strong point lol?!

Thanks for all your help so far,
/Steve

lots of places have mac inside debenhams of house of fraser so it is worth checking. where do you live and i could let you know. if you have about £100 to spend i think creating a quad for her would be lovely - you pick four eyeshadows and put them in a compact. then perhaps a blush and lipstick and maybe an eyeliner to go with it too :) that would be super awesome!

Hey,

Sorry for not posting back on here for a while, I drove up to my nearest MAC counter last weekend and picked up a bag of goodies for her. I ended up spending a little more than planned… £144 by the end of things but she’s worth it :)

The staff on the counter were very helpful and guided me in picking what they believed to be the best choices from the description of the type of person my fiancée is (Rocker/Goth Chick).

I ended up buying her the following:

Gently off eye and lip makeup remover
PP Eyeshad-Shroom
PP Eyeshad-Shadowy Lady
PP Eyeshad-Carbon
PP Eyeshad-Contrast
PP Eyeshad-Knight Divine
Zoom Lash-Zoomblack
Eye Kohl-Smolder
#224 Tapered Blending Brush
#239 Eye Shading Brush
Pro Palette Eye Shadow x15

I’m not sure if I got all the names right because I’m taking this information from the receipt I got but I’m sure you lot can work it all out. My only disappointment was that it would have been nice if it had come in a small gift box or gift wrapping of some sort.

Now I just have to hope that I have bought the right things…

Thanks for the help and advice :)

I think she'll like it for the effort you put in. It really shows that you care about her.

Let us know how it goes!

Steve, you're a real sweet heart, and when she realizes all the effort you went through for her, I'm sure she will be overwhelmed.
On a side note, I think the colors you and the MAC artists picked out are fantastic, and are very versatile. The 224 in my all time favourite/most used eye brush. So much so i bought a second!

I think i can speak more all the specktra ladies when we say your lady is lucky to have a man as thoughtful as you!
