Is Platinum only for Blondes?

Hii~ i'm a newbie here

I have dark dark brown hair and i've dyed my hair once before, a couple of red streaks underneath my top layers that faded to an ugly brassy-orangey colour. I want to get platinum blonde underneath my shorter layers and to cover up the brassy colour that's still in my hair. Would it be worth it to kill my hair? i don't really mind bleaching it

Hi there :welcome: You'd have to bleach and to be on the safe side, probably more than one session. As you have dyed your hair before, it's a bit more effort and takes longer. There are products that take out the dyed pigments from your hair. To get to a platinum blonde you have to get out the yellow of your hair which is/was a pita for me. Check this blog, she has great advice for becoming a blonde. As I am in Europe, I might not be too helpful with products. I'd just recommend that you do it in a salon with someone that knows what they are doing. And you get a lot of great hair masks to pamper your hair back to health. Good luck and let us know how it went :)

I can;t tell you whether it will be "worth it" or not, but i can tell you it will be a total and complete bitch.

First, i would say doing this on your own would be a nightmare. Your Dark hair will naturally lift to an orangy yellow colour, the parts that had red will lift to a bright orange. you will have to be able to even out both those sections, and bring them to a light blond, almost white. You will still have yellow to your hair, but then you will have to tone it, and that might take a few times. you might need to bleach it two or three times, and then play with different toners to get it to a true platinum.

And then you will need a good haircut.

I've had dark hair my entire life and used to dye my hair black up until about 3 years ago. I recently bleached out my ends for the ombre hair look and I just dyed it back to dark.

First, if you do it don't do it yourself. Going dark is easy but going lighter is very difficult. Get it done professionally! Secondly, be prepared for disgusting looking ends. Bleach kills your hair, I don't care how gentle the stylist tries to go on the bleach the fact is your hair will be damaged. There's also no way to know how damaged your hair will become. With lighter hair the dry and split ends show up way more than with darker hair. After I bleached my ends I got a hair cut and my ends still looked disgusting.

I'm not sure how dark you've dyed your hair in the past but even with all my black grown out of my hair the bleach still turned my hair orange. Even with toner and a bunch of other products that were put on my hair it was only a temporary fix. Every time I washed my hair the color faded and the orange came out.

Get a strand test at a salon done first so you can get an idea of how your hair will react.

You can do it yourself, but it takes a long time to get the results you want, and you do risk ruining your hair. But of course, getting it done at a hair salon can also wreck havok on your hair; it's a risk you have to take into consideration, worst case scenario is having to cut your hair short.
I bleached my hair completely white on my own. It took 9 bleachings - I had dyed my hair black every month since I was 12, so there was a lot of colour that had to be removed from my hair. When I was finally done, I could take a hairstrand and it would almost crumble between my fingers when it was wet. I had to get bangs and shorter layers around my face after that, but it did suit me. I really learned to appreciate leave-in conditioners.
Now I'm back to black after having grey, green, pink, blue and purple hair (not at the same time, mind you!), and I will have to grow out the damaged parts of my hair before I will experiment again. It's still brittle.

Remember that a purple toner can help remove some of the brassiness from your hair. Manic Panic makes one.

Can you recommend a few conditioners? I was using a blue conditioner from L'Oreal against the yellow tones, but now my hear is platinum, it stains my hair blue. Not that I mind though ;)

In the shower I just use whatever conditioner that's near me. I like the leave-in from Dove. It's from the blue line, I think. I don't really know much about their products, and I don't remember what it
's called, though. Dove says that it's an overnight treatment with proteins and stuff. Makes the hair really soft and less like straw.

Thanks a lot, I'll have a look at the Dove products. Currently I use the conditioners from LUSH and olive oil.
