So...That's the basic gist of it.

And I know...I should probably go to a salon, and that's mot likley what will happen. But if I could get some good how-to advice from people who've bleached parts of their hair...not all of it (I would look damn awful as a blonde hahaha)

Anyway...I was thinking of putting panels in my hair. I'm not sure what color yet, but I know I'm going to have to bleach first because this black hair just wont do anything with dye. I also thought about just doing the tips...I know...a little spontaneous. But I'm all about change, and with starting at MAC I figured I could re-vamp a little

and get my Fierce on!

So...Anyone experienced with doing this at home? Is it hard? Do I need four hands (aka a friend)? Should I just leave it to the professionals or would I be capable? Any before and after pics? Any and all advice is welcome!

TIA!

If you are worried about cost you could probably hit up a beauty school near you and have them do it. You could just have them bleach and you can add the color yourself if you wanted to. Speaking from experience... bleach can be a BAD thing and my disaster happened IN a salon. I'd splurge and go to a place you feel comfortable, but I would totally have someone else do it, even if it is only at a school.

Panels are a pain in the butt to do when you have no colouring training. I've done panels on a friend before we used foils (she works at a salon and so we can get them from there). Don't do it to yourself, it's just too hard. Tips would be really easy to do by yourself if you want. I don't have any pictures of her hair though it turned out well though. But we've been doing stupid stuff to out hair for years.

Could you do a quick walk through on how you do just the tips? I figured paneling would be a pain with all the upkeep on roots and what not...tips might be just the thing

If your natural hair color is black or very dark, lightening your hair more than a few shade is for pros. I let a friend do highlights in my hair and they were orange, like Halloween orange.

Other than beauty schools, if you're in a metropolitan area, some salons do training where you can get a good cut and color for free or very low price.

Without a doubt all ways go to a professional at a good reputable salon.
Never ever mess with bleach at home. Trust me I experimented
as a teenager and ruined my hair. Emphasis on the RUINED part.
Good luck and congrats on your job at MAC!

I think I'll head off to the salon after work...I love being ridiculously spur of the moment!

My hair isn't naturally this dark, I've dyed it twice with semi perm. (Natural Instincts) color...black.

I'll let yalll know how this adventure turns out!

I used to bleach my own hair blonde for years and I think I did a pretty good job. It's difficult to do on yourself unless you know the anatomy of hair, the levels, the shade you want, where you want the color. I hated doing the roots because I would just pick random pieces of hair and bleach them. You have to find an order. but anywayyy, yes I would probably recommend going to a salon, like everyone said. There's a lot of things that could go wrong. I was just lucky I guess (and I studied about hair a lot!)

Go to the salon. If your gonna use bleach and you have darker hair you gonna end u there any way so you might as well send the same amount and get it done professionally.

take it from me. i have white roots and ornage hair when i bleached mine.... ended up at the salon anyways.

Good luck!

I'm only gonna go for an under layer of my hair...and only about 4-5 inches of my hair. And I got it priced at a salon and I'm gonna check one more to see how they would do it for me.

But, I ended up getting my hair cut at the first salon...haha...so now. My hairs a bit shorter (not above my shoulder, but she cut a bunch off and thinned it out a little) and a bit funkier.

So...I'm def. gonna take it to a salon, I just have to find a good one...

If you are ever in Columbia Mall, Katura, visit Salon Cielo & Spa on the lower level right outside of Nordstroms. I work as a receptionist there and we have great stylists that rock at bleaching hair. It's pricey but well worth it.

If you can, ask for Hasan (guy), Tim (guy), or Shinhye (girl). Seriously, these three excel in hair colouring.
