keeping red hair red

Hey All
I am a natural redhead and I now have a job where I am out in the sun all day long. My hair is starting to fade to blonde. I have been wearing a hat to keep it out of the sun but it has not worked my hair is still fading. Is there some sort of product out there that can help with this? SunOut? <smile>
Thanks

Wash your hair with a shampoo//conditioner that deposits the color, John Frieda has one, and use a sunscreen made for hair to keep it from highlighting but I don't know if that will help too much.

that'll definitely help. as for getting the color back in your hair, there's plenty of options out there: hibiscus tea is said to put the red back in a person's hair when used as a rinse or soak - then there's dyes.

I've been coloring my hair a deep red for a few years now and it takes a lot of maintenance to keep the color fresh. Aveda makes color depositing S&C as does Graham Webb & Goldwell. The conditioners make more of a difference than the shampoos. Aveda has a Personal Blends product where they mix a color for you.

Sunscreens in hair products are not FDA approved as efficient UV protection. So while I think they are better than nothing, a hat is still your best defense.

I haven't tried those John Frieda color glazes but they're definitely a less expensive option. Though the regular color shampoo and conditioners don't do much. They don't deposit color and aren't unique formulations for reds, no matter what the marketing says.

I would say try Pureology, wear hats in the sun, and use an Artec color depositing shampoo/conditioner 1x a week.

Thank you so much for all your help. I would hate to dye my hair red. It grows really fast that I try to donate it for cancer causes and I would prefer to keep it virgin hair. Not to mention the upkeep. A shampoo or conditioner that "deposits" color. Is that like a dye?

The hat alone is not working. I have a solid cowboy hat that allows me to put all my hair up into but it is still fading. I will definitely check into the John Frieda sunscreen, maybe with the hat that will work.
what is Pureology?

It's not a dye per se...but it does help retain the color. It's a sort of temporary dye more than anything else.

I like the stuff by John Frieda that's a shampoo//conditioner, there's also a sealant that I like made by the same line.

when my hair was red i used this paul mitchell shampoo i got at a beauty supply store. it was bright red and looked like cherry kool aid but it helped me retain my auburn color so well. when i stopped using it my color started fading so i know it worked like magic.

glosses (like john frieda's) are pretty much like temporary wash out dyes. your hair will absorb the dye and it will stay anywhere from your next shampoo to a week. they just help people with keeping their color longer or help people who want the shine back in their dull as dishwater hair.

if all these recommendations aren't working, it could just be your body. if you were born a blonde, your cells could be possibly producing more blonde than red.
