Kumar to teach a class at UPenn!

Actor Kal Penn is going to teach ' "Images of Asian Americans in the Media" and "Contemporary American Teen Films" '.

I'm frankly annoyed with it. While he is educated, it blows my mind that they would let him teach two classes. Just because you participate in something or are a member of a group, doesn't mean you should be able to teach a class. For instance, I shouldn't lecture on Asian American adoptees, even though I know a bit about it and am one. If he were teaching about acting, I could see it, since he has had some diverse roles.

What's even worse is that so many people think this is such a great thing. The classes are, of course, but someone who isn't trained in that or has experience teaching?

I really hate how being a celebrity gives you these privileges.

I agree. I love Kal Penn, he's talented but that doesn't give him the right to teach a class. I understand if he's there to lecture and it was optional for students to come and listen to it. I dont know what the college education board is thinking when they make decisions like this.

I totally agree with both of you. Was he the most knowledgeable person they could get? Although I love him in Van Wilder, etc it seems like a strange choice.

I just watched Van Wilder the rise of Taj that movie is hilarious but he is not teaching material now come on...only because he made his fraternity win a trophy he can teach now???

I hate the movies he was in, college BS.

I get the impression that they will likely be weekend classes, sort of like workshops rather than semester long classes. I'm sure he has other things going on which would prevent him from teaching full time, as well as the facts you've already pointed out about him not really being a professional, he's just a guest lecturer type deal. But I don't know, it doesn't say exactly in the article.
