So I was looking for recipes in old issues of BUST mag and found one in the FEB/MAR2009 issue for V-day and forgot this short article that raised my brows! It was about how women pay more for health care:

BIG BUSINESS UNFAIR TO YOUR LADY BUSINESS: WHY WOMEN PAY MORE FOR HEALTH INSURANCE by Laura Krafft

"Bust readers know it's great to be a gal, but have you ever looked through a guy's medicine cabinet and realized how much more expensive it is to be you? Forget the hair products, makeup, birth control, and pink razors--tampons are like rolled-gauze gold--because the expense differential doesn't stop there. According to the The New York Times, "Striking new evidence has emerged of a widespread gap in the cost of health insurance, women pay much more than men of the same age for individual policies providing identical coverage." Apparently, women are most apt to get regular checkups, fill their prescriptions, and are more conscientious about taking care of themselves. Anyone who's ever spent the night resting her head on a single guy's twice annually-cleaned pillowcase could tell you that. But while insurance companies claim it's this cost of upkeep that adds up, what isn't mentioned is that women are charged for child-bearing costs, despite the fact that most policies tack on actual maternity costs as an extra expense. That's right: insurance agencies are actuarially charging women for the mere possession of reproductive organs. Which is why insurance superintendent Mila Kofman is quoted as saying, "There's a strong public-policy reason to prohibit gender-based rates. Only women can bear children. But women should not have to bear the entire expense." Agreed. Next, let's figure out a way to reduce the cost of tampons."

Okay, I don't have insurance yet but for any of you that do, what do you think of that?

^Same. I'm covered by my school and parents and I'm almost never sick and when I do have to pay, it's literally $5 for medicine which is great.

Ugh, it's just another problem with health care.
I feel like it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't thing.

They'll charge you more/toss you aside when you get sick, and also when you take appropriate measures to stay healthy.

Women do pay more but its not too bad its maybe around $20-$40 more per month. I know it adds up but men don't have to go to the obgyn or take mammograms once a year. I had 3 kids and with those 3 kids alone, it probably cost at least $30,000-$40,000 more than my husband in medical bills.

After a certain age around 24.. women pay a lot more in car insurance than men do. we always get the short end of the stick...

well, i dont know how to explain it in proper terms. but ill tell you that i ended up in the hospital with heart failure and they had one of the top cardiologists in canada perform surgery on me: one to connect me to a mechanical heart pump that would function for my left ventricle. and then i had another procedure to get it removed. all that equipment itself was $150,000. All the equipment, labour, doctor visits, hospital stay etc is covered by my BC medical card that i received at birth. I paid for nothing except my prescription drugs. and my school's health insurance pays for a bit of my prescriptions so i dont pay as much.

HTH!
