Love full makeup...but how much is too much?

I've always been into makeup for as long as I can remember. It just seems like such a natural part of my life. I change up my looks and whatever...but I seriously can't be without some kind of product on my face -- LOL. If I'm at home all day or am going out for a hot minute, I might settle for gloss and moisturizer. But, it's rare. I love my full face -- even if it doesn't appear to be that way. On jobs, I always go a little "extra" because I feel like I should stand out as an artist. But, for everyday...I feel as though I am forced to tone down my look because it's not the norm for everyday women. I do hair, also, so I can get away with some things. But, as a professional -- what do you think is "too much?" I never liked to put limits on my creativity -- I love it that the beauty industry gives us the freedom to think out of the box and experiment (whereas, other ppl simply cannot without being criticized), but what is your personal opinion? Do you take the time to "glamourize" in the AM before work or would you blend into the rest of the "everyday women" when you walk out of the house? Just curious...

I only wear make-up to a job if it's really expected of me by the client ('client' meaning anything from a bride to a cosmetics company), and off the clock I rarely wear make-up beyond tinted lipbalm and a quick curl of my lashes. I tend to leave it for special occasions because make-up = work, and I don't like bringing work home.

It's my conclusion that make-up artists either get heavier and heavier over time (a friend of mine refers to it as losing your make-up perspective) or they repell away from make-up entirely. I couldn't tell you if the same applies to make-up civilians.

With you on that... I love the overthetop makeup I wear for counter-work as well as the really extreme stuff for MAC events... but honestly when I'm off the clock I rarely even manage to get my mascara on. But some of my long-time colleagues - I've never seen them "naked".
Maybe I do it to remember what I actually look like?

I'm actually wearing absoutely nothing but clear lip balm (yes not even gloss, but balm) today.

This is because I'm taking up a co-worker on his challenge to wear zero makeup for a day.

On a normal day, I always always always do full eyes (mascara, shadow, not always liner though). Full face is a rarity for me, but I always do some blush or a shimmerbrick at least, and I'm huge on lip gloss too (addicted really).

wel myself i love heavy eyes, i always have black eyeliner and liquid liner on. and a fair amount of eyeshadow

but i dont wear much on my lips... a neutral or something

but if i wore say,red lipstick, i think i might look OTT for work.

i think its true when they say all lips or all eyes.

well thats what i think

Most of the MAs that I see at the MAC counters, wear TOO much, imo. Makeup isn't about completely looking like someone else (unless it's something really dramatic like for a special event) but it's more about enhancing what you have while at the same time showing your creativity.

I mean, I understand that the MAs have to wear the products to sell them, but often it's just too much and it looks over the top. I don't like wearing a lot of makeup on a day to day basis, but if I go out at night I will take more time and usually apply more than usual. But going out every day in a full face of makeup is - for me - too much.

I love applying my MU in the morning. It's just part of how I wake up/prepare myself for a day out. So yeh... Even if it's just a hot minute, i'll take the time to do my face.

At the MINIMUM...

Foundation/blush/liner/chapstick or a very lightly pigmented gloss. Granted using diff ways of application can really change how this turns out, from just a very basic evening of the complexion, to more dramatic.

Makeup is one of the few artistic outlets I have in my life right now, since nothing at my job requires creativity. So I use it as a outlet for that specific need in my life. The only thing I'm not really into is lipcolor. I like to play down my lips or leave them neutral, this way the focus of my look is always on my eyes.

So yeh, I'm never caught outside my house w/out first doing my face. At the minimum it only takes like 15 minutes to make myself feel a lot more confident about my appearance (even if the result doesn't end up looking like i'm made up), so i figure why go out w/out it? Never know who your going to bump into, might as well always look your best.

IMO, false lashes aren't meant for daily use; then there's nothing special about them when it's a special occasion
dark lips and bright eyes are maybe just a pet peeve of mine, but application also plays a huge role in this one
heavy foundation + obvious powder to set + bronzer + blush + highlighter is too much for the skin, esp. for me, since i am breakout-prone and also just because it's not pretty. i'm about about one thing. if i want bronzer, contour where i want it and then just do a blush. some people be highlighting off the hook and the idea isn't to have a super shimmery cheek, just that little bit to bring attention in a positive way. in that aspect, IMO, comes the less is more thing, because it's really easy to overdo it, even with just too much liner/gloss or even just too many colors

i've always followed the advice of:

heavy eyes/neutral or pale lips
bold lips/neutral eyes

i'm a sucker for balance...and for the J Lo makeup style. i'm also into putting as little makeup as possible to achieve the look i want--with sheer foundation only on my t-zone (minus the forehead), MSF as bronzer/blush in shooting star and concealer under my eyes. from there it can go either heavy eyes/neutral lips or bold lips/neutral eyes.

IMO most MA's i've encountered at counters and stores wear too much. it's just a pet peeve of mine to see foundation noticably CAKEY.

Even though, I am in the corporate world, I love full makeup at all times. I know how to tailor it to my environment. I wear wild looks for the club, etc.

You can wear fun colors at corporate work too, it's just all about the application...

Today I had on Juxt inner V, aquadasic on lid, and freshwater on the outer V today. I just make sure that I keep any bold colors, bold near the lashline, and have them fade as they get to my crease. This way you get great bold color when your eye is open, but you dont look like you have bright colors up to your brows @ work hehe. I also wont put any color bold colors on my lower lashline for work eigther, just black liner.

I think it's possible to pull off any desired colors @ work as long as it's taistful application.

I think its not about the colors, a lot of it is about the skill --I wear a lot of makeup and I know before I learned all these great tricks here at specktra. I will also pair bright colors as a bright top liner and wear a neutral in the crease for work.

Makeup is natural to me, I've worn it every day since I was 12 so I guess, I can't imagine not wearing it. I've always done a full face, if I skip anything its blush.

I think it depends on the colours the person is using, how they apply it and how much they apply. When I go to the MAC counters I look at the ladies and they are wearing obscene amounts of makeup.

It's my last day at my NASA internship...and I will definately miss the <3 I get for my makeup creativity. My boss loves MAC and I've brought in my traincase many a times to show her some of the new things I've bought. She loves it!

The two other girls in the office also really enjoy some of the different looks I bring to work with me. It makes it kinda nice to be celebrated for being creative instead of scolded because it's not considered "business approriate."

I start a new job next Monday, and I'll be doing Enterprise Server Support for Dell. it's phone based, so i wonder how much freedom I will have with my face.....I'm planning on posting my "last day of work" FOTD later too.

But in general, I can go anywhere from stark raving mad with absolutely NO makeup at work (not even powder or mascara...) to today...full blown makeup. Not as heavy as I'd wear to the club, but still bright. I really fill the range on looks at work.

once the foundation starts caking and the lines from smiling or blinking create creases, it's DEFINITELY too much makeup.

OMG you know pancake face is the new hot summer look!

But in all seriousness, i think thats stems more from an application problem, then wearing a full face heh.

I've always worn light make-up since junior high school and, since I entered my makeup school, I have learnt not to wear too much to let the skin breathe at its maximum.

As a mua, I have to make more elaborate looks for work but at home, it's much more lighter: concealer, powder, mascara and blush.
And when I don't go out, nothing but a good moisturizer for the day.

thats great.

I have also loved make-up and have worn it for a loong time. I have gone through make-up phases where I will love it and wear more, then obviously have not been so interested and worn less. I have always switched it up tried to be creative. I remember how irritated I was in highschool that the girls around me always seemed to wear their face the same everyday! Same color eyeshadow, same application.. boring!

I agree that it is all in the application! I dont have great skin and have alot of scars and used to wear sooo much foundation and powder that my b/f would tell me that I looked plastic. but I preffered that over my skin lookin all nasty. I finally started using a sheer tint and concealer, and sometimes a mineral powder and my skin is looking soo much better! I have always loved blush and am guilty of putting too much on sometimes.. but I always try to balance out my look, like you girls were saying... bold eye nude lip, vice versa.

Since I have been on this site I find my eyeshadow to be getting brighter bolder, and more funky. I think its great. In my job I am out in the community all day, (alot of stores!) and sometimes I'll check myself in the flurescent lighting and get alittle taken aback. I wonder if I should tone it down a bit and NOT wear the blue shadow since I see no-one around like me but then I get over it, because I have the right to express my individualism and creativity however I want. Hopefully the application is good and I dont look garish. But thanks to you ladies I am getting better and better everyday!
