MAC brushes for a beginner

My make-up resolution for 2009 is to get rid of my generic department store brushes and switch to MAC. My initial idea was to get the Adoring Carmine sets first to kind of figure out which ones I liked and wanted before I bought the full sizes, but as it turns out I don't have time for that. See, I live a loooong way from the nearest MAC store (unless I want to buy a plane ticket first and go to the one at the airport), so my best option tends to be eBay, which is risky. But my father is currently on holiday in Orlando, and since it's my birthday today I figured I'd have him stop by the MAC store and buy me some brushes for presents. But the problem is that I have not decided on which brushes yet. So my question is: which brushes are essential, and which ones would you recommend to a beginner? I do need a solid eyeliner brush, and being an eyeshadow whore I need those too. Especially a blending brush and a good one for the crease. A foundation brush would be good as well, and maybe a buffering brush. I don't really wear blush, so I'll wait before I purchase a brush for that. Which do you find work the best for you, and should be a part of every brush collection?

Wow! Sorry about that.

ETA - my 2 must haves are the 187 and 217, followed closely by the 109.

hiya

theres lots of brushes you can go for.. theres xmas travel sets at the moment too.. being a mac make up artist though.. these are the ones i used to tend to reccomend when i worked there.. and the ones customers used to prefer when id try a couple on them..

eyeliner brush - 266; a great angle brush which allows you to apply eyeline perfectly, takes a little getting used to but definately better than the pointy eyeliner brush
eyeshadow applicator - 239; great to apply the colour onto your lid.. as it gives good colour payoff. also good to apply shadow under the bottom eyeline.. its strong and compact brush style make it a must have
eyeshadow blending - 224; defo my favourite blending brush.. it gives such a soft blend and i also use it to apply eyeshadow sometimes
foundation brush - 187; gives a great blended finish whilst also giving good coverage.. you can also opt for the slightly smaller version which is the 188 which is a little more manageable, this brush can also be used to apply creme blusher and highlighter
powder/blusher - 129 is a good powder blusher combo.. and also the 150 is also a good poweder brush

hope this helps!

That helps so much, thank you! If I bat my eyelashes enough perhaps I'll get them all. OM NOM NOM, as they say.

I think the essential eye brushes are:
239 - great for e/s application, it can really pack on color, is the perfect size and is really dense - a must have
219 - is great for getting color in the crease - it fits that area of the eye beautifully and gives really precise application
222 - to blend, blend, blend (I think it is a bit softer and smaller than the 224 - sometimes I find the 224 to be too large for my crease)
228 - I really like this brush for detail work - it's tiny and has firm bristles. I use this a lot when I do a darker, smokey eye.

For eyeliner - the only MAC brush I like for eyeliner is the 209 - I like the pointed tip for a really fine line, but if you'd prefer an angled brush, IMO the 208 is the easiest to use (also the smallest).

For foundation brushes, I really prefer a non-conventional brush - I like the 109 or even the 116. I'm not a fan of the 190.

The 187 brush is the *perfect* brush for buffing over foundation - or applying finishing powder- for that perfect smooth look. But it's $42.00, which (although worth it), is hard to stomach for just one brush.

Happy brush shopping - and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Thank you so much! I can probably handle the $42. If I were to buy it here in Norway it would probably be even more expensive, and on eBay the shipping would put it at even more. The 187 is probably the brush I've been recommended the most ever since I started showing an interest in make-up too.

My favorites:

face: 168 for contour or blush or highlight, 187 for foundation or light blush application, 188 for cream blushes

Eyes, whatever, I'm not the greatest at those and I just love my face brushes. XD

When it comes to blending brushes, what are the pros and cons of the tapered ones compared to the non-tapered brushes?

the 217 is amazing too! i find it a little harsh though compared to the 224/222 but its great for blending concealer etc

for beginner definitely try #217... it's such a versatile brush.. you can use it either to pack color onto the lid, to do a crease work, to define the outer V, to blend all of the color together, to apply cream-based shadow or even to apply concealer..

and other brushes are :
- #239 : pack color onto the lid and you can use the tip to do a creasework as well
- #168 : to contour your cheek or to apply blush
- #187 : to apply liquid foundation or other cream-based product and to apply very pigmented blushes

however,, you can skip either #168 or #187 and go with #109 instead.... #109 can be used to contour your cheek (it's great for that, cause it buffs the color rightaway) as well as to apply liquid foundation... some even prefer #109 over #187 in terms of liquid foundation..... i, myyself, haven't tried this stuff, but some of youtubers and bloggers said so.... ^^

as for liner brush, i def. recommend :
- #266

but uhm.. i found Coastal Scents Black Aklon Angled Liner works just the same if not better... also Sonia Kashuk Bent Eyeliner Brush is amazing.. but since you're asking MAC, go with #266... #208 or #209 is a small tip brush which is sometimes hard to control with..

other brushes like #150, #129 or #116 are essential... but i don't really like spending lots of money on brushes that are not 'special'... say like #187 or #168 or #109.. you barely bump into that kind of brushes in drugstore or other cheapo brands.... but say like normal powder or blush brushes are everywhere... but that's just me... so yea

well,,, i found that the tapered one tends to wash out the color more than the non-tapered brush... sometimes when you blend the color - maybe using the #224 - it somehow tones down the color a little bit..... by using the tapered one, like #222, because it's denser, you will find the color washed out... but not that much really....

The set of brushes used on my M·A·C course was;

  • #129 Powder/blush
  • #192 Foundation brush
  • #217 Blending brush
  • #219 Pencil brush
  • #222 Tapered blending
  • #249 Large shader
  • #266 Small angle
  • #316 Lip brush (covered)
This was reckoned (by M·A·C's head of artist training in Europe) to be sufficient for getting started in professional makeup artistry.

217 : I use it in the crease and for blending , my favourite brush !
252 : I use it to apply paintpots or eyeshadow all over my lid
209 : fluidline

I'm getting the 239, I regret not buying the last time I was at the Mac Store because it's also far from where I live ...

I also have the 224, but I don't use it often, so I'm not going to recommend it to you here.

I don't own MAC face brushes, so can't tell you anything about them.
