Mac 'Collectors' Out there

are you a mac collector? if so how would you characterise one?

i have this insatiable urge with all collections to buy all eyeshadows and pigments and then backups of some of them. i feel as if i dont buiy now at retail, i'll regret it later and pay a ridiculously inflated price later down the line when i see at item used in a stunning FOTD and i'll lemming for it for weeks! i have a mac note book of LE stuff i *need* although my list has gone down to one or to more HTF items. over a year i have built up 8 15 mac pro palettes and i find this rather unnerving- my dirty little secret.

Do you 'collect' mac but not necessarily wear all of it? or do you not touch it at all because of their worth? what do you collect and why. are you open about it or a closet mac manaic like me?

i consider myself a "collector" although i don't have anywhere near as much as some people on here. i'm open about it, but few people really understand how important a makeup line can be..the only friends i have who know the value of my stuff are the friends i've met through MUA, specktra, and lj, although, since i've hung out with several of the girls, i consider a couple of them really close friends. i've met some amazing people through mac. i have backups of a few things, although lately i haven't been going crazy about them, purely because the things don't excite me. i'd rather pay over retail for a parrot backup, or an all-girl backup, because i use them so often, than buy a bunch of shadow backups of colors i don't use, if that makes sense. i have a few really rare items (sticky wicket, some old screw-top shadows, ghetto for tsubi, etc), backups of some of the more common items (parrot, guacamole, lucky green, the MSFs) and then a few backups or recent items (water nymph, pink maribu, moisturegleam). i'm crazy for pigmets, specifically. i'm trying to wind down, to some extent, because i can't keep paying for all this stuff, and i have two traincases plus some full of stuff that doesn't get touched. i'm in kinda a rut, and tend to use the same colors over and over again..if i could afford it, i would be a little more hardcore about collecting, and tyring to have everything LE from every collection..but i can't bring myself to pay 100+ for a pleasureflush..not yet, at least..

as someone who's been wearing MAC since the beginning of the company, i think people who buy it just to have it and don't wear it are nuts!

what's the point??? to have a rancid and un-wearable Playboy lippie just to look at the packing every once in a while???

something that beautiful should be worn and appreciated!

I just buy what I need I figure even if I do buy something a little inflated later its not like I bought a bunch of other stuff I might not use.

i just started to be crazy about mac about a few months back, although my mac collection is teeny weeny as compared to most of u,
i still consider myself a collector. In fact i'm in the midst of creating a webpage of my beloved MAC cosmetics...

http://www.femmecreations.com/cosmetichome.html
(i'm known as geeko in another forum)

it's still not fully completed yet (have to update purchases and liquid lasts and pigments to the page)... i do wear my make up like my blushers pretty often. As for eyeshadows i wear them when i m going out shopping or over to my bf's place.

I consider myself a collector (though I never wanted to become one) because I have an excessive number of an item (in my case, MAC pigments) in shades I would never wear... meanining I bought them just to have them. Add that to the fact that I'd like to get rid of them since some I've never touched but I can't part with them because of how wanted they are by other people and, hi, my name is pinkdaisy226 and I'm a collector. *hides face*

I agree ..to a point. I always buy the e/s, blushes and pigments that are LE or new etc. I may not always wear them, sometime in the future I am sure I will ..hopefully but I *have* to have them and if they are LE I will for SURE buy them.

One time I didnt buy some e/s and regretted it ever since.

As for lippies, liquids etc that can go bad, I dont buy unless I know I will use it asap. So my "collection" of lipglosses, lipsticks and cream blushes are limited and I generally use them up and dont have many but to each their own I guess.

Powder cant go bad so I buy it and someday I will use it.

Yeah, I agree with Pinkfeet, I tend to collect more e/s, pigments and blush than cream-based cosmetics cos I know they'll last for a long time and while I collect most stuff I usually don't want to have to pay too much over retail for items e.g. Pleasureflush MSF so I'm not that hardcore a collector.

I'm a sucker for pigment though because most of them are so pretty and I usually sample them out anyway so I can justify getting whole bottles of it.

And I collect because I want those colours even though I don't use makeup that often because I have school 5 days a week and we aren't allowed to wear makeup but I do use my stuff. But yeah, sometimes I feel really guilty because I have quite a lot, yet I'm always lusting after all the new things that are coming out and I'll probably never ever hit pan on an e/s.

I'm pigment crazy, and I'm just like you, I'll buy like 2 or 3 of every color in a collection, just cause if i end up really liking it, then I'll regret it in a few years when I see the bottom of the jar, and my only chance of getting more would be paying $30-$40 bucks a pop for something that I could've gotten at retail price. I'm a cheap bastard, but can't help myself when it comes to mac!!!!!!!

I don't consider myself a collector but more of a buyer-user. Everything I buy I use, which is why I buy it. I don't buy backups of anything, cuz
they usually come out with new colors that I want. And then I would be up to my eyeballs in makeup! Why doesn't that sound bad?

i can't agree more. and also, i don't see the point in having a s*load of make up if you're not even gonna wear it, and/or learn how to...personally, i don't consider myself a collector really. sure i have probably more make up than the average person, i look forward to adding constantly, and i never wear the same look twice, but i am nowhere near risa or mac_whore, and that's okay with me. firstly, i am a college student and i have to pace myself if i want to be able to afford to live, and second, it's just not a priority of mine to have 8 back-ups or whatnot, and i have never regretted not picking anything up, which i think is a good thing since i have quality of mind, haha. seriously though, make up (even if it's an obsession) should be fun and not something people compete over, that's why i like the community aspect of specktra and lj, because now i'm more at peace with what i have an i'm not so "omg, i neeeeed to get another pleasureflush, so what if i'm out $90". yeah, and i don't mean this as criticism to anyone who would do that, i just can't do that, and i'm happy with that i have still, if that makes any sense.

Sometimes I feel the panic that I need to get everything in a collection so that I don't miss out on the next "big" item. But then it just ends up sitting in a drawer! I find that the only things that I really "collect" or have a lot of are eye shadows and pigments. I wish I could collect and buy more but it is more important that I use what I have and only get things I know I would really use!
I wish I could have it all though!!!

I consider myself more of a whore than a collector - I feel an urge to own it all, but I make sure to use everything - I never get something just to have it sit there in the drawer.

I think I didn't become MAC crazy until I joined Specktra. More information was available to me here, and I started wanting MAC just to have it. Since I missed out on so many collections, I find myself desperately looking for those sought-after LE items (parrot, lucky green, MSF's, etc). As I am typing this I am staring at my pigments in their little display case. All of which I will never use up, I just love to look at them!

Every time a new collection comes out, I announce it to my husband, and we have to go out and get some stuff that day. I take him with me because he is the only one I will admit my addiction to!

If I wasn't so poor, I would buy backups of things I really like. Right now, I am terrified to even open my Sunplosion e/s I bought from a lovely Specktrette! I am afraid once its gone, its gone! A shame cause I love orange e/s!!

But I do try to use all my MAC. Honestly, I have enough to last for several lifetimes!

Yes, I am a collector and yes, I seriously need to attend "MACaholics Anonymous"!

I have been a MAC fan for about 7 years now and yes, I feel the need to own every eyeshadow (I have almost 500 at this point not counting backups and that includes the really hard to find, hundreds of dollars on eBay shades although I have never paid that much for them), every quad (I have all but 1) and every pigment (I own full sized jars of every pigment they have put out for sale, the only ones I don't have are the two rumoured to have been given away at an event some years ago but has never been verified to my knowledge). I used to try to purchase everything but I convinced myself (i.e. my bank account protested the misuse of my funds *grin*) I didn't need to collect the things I am not really interested in so I only collect eyeshadows, pigments and postcards. I do purchase and use lipsticks, blushes, eyeliners etc but I don't consider their purchase to be part of my active collecting because I only purchase the ones I will use whereas, there are many shadows, quads and palettes I only "fondle" and gaze adoringly at *grin*. I was collecting the lipglass's (I do own all of the lipglass stains ever put out including Angry Inch) but with the exception of the stains, I decided that was useless because they will go bad after a while.
I also have all this listed in a spreadsheet along with various other information about each item I will probably never use....*grin*
