MAC freelance + other makeup job?

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I have a question about employment (hence my posting in this section). I recently applied to MAC and after following up and contacting them on my own, 2 months down the road and one interview later I was told that they went with someone else with more makeup experience for the permanent job (which didn't surprise me), but may still be interested in hiring me as a freelance artist.

I haven't heard further details on that (I'll probably have to call them again), but in the meantime I would very much like a job that has more reliable hours than the freelance. Now, the question: does anyone know if there's any sort of conflict that could arise from working at, say, an Estee Lauder counter and then on off days doing the freelance at MAC? I know they're all affiliated, but just in case anyone here had any first hand experience with such an arrangement and any obscure policy issues that might arise from it, I thought I'd ask.

Thanks in advance for any advice offered/experiences shared!

You cannot freelance for MAC and work for Estee Lauder at the same time. You also cannot freelance for a MAC competitor (such as Stila, Urban Decay, etc) while employed as a MAC freelancer. I would suggest taking a job at Lauder, gaining experience and reapplying at MAC...good luck!

Thanks for the reply! Just wanted to see if I was being paranoid or not. Much appreciated!

On the lines of this, what is MAC's policy regarding freelancing for them and working for a cosmetic retailer such as Sephora? Sephora isn't really a direct competitor in my mind, but obviously it is their opinion that matters.

you can freelance for any number of lines, you just cant be permanently employed by one line & then freelance for another ... conflict of interest ... i know it sounds kinda funny but when you freelance you are not obligated to work for them, you choose to pick up those hours. when you are a regular employee, that's your job and they want you to be exclusive.

you can be freelance for mac and still freelance for another company. i know plenty of people that do that so they can make ends meet. you just can't be a perm. employee of another line and freelance for mac, or any other line for that matter

They told me when I signed my paperwork that I could not work for a competing line, freelancing or otherwise, that it was a conflict of interest. I just talked to one of my CM's the other day and she said no, that MAC would let me go. I know another freelancer that works for two other lines but she keeps it on the DL (although I haven't seen her in months so I don't know if she's still with MAC.) I asked about Sephora, Ulta, even just working for Macy's. Any place that sells competing lines she said is a no go.

I was working for Macy*s prior to getting the freelance position at MAC and even asked if I could transfer departments to children or home and the answer was still no. It may be different in other areas (I'm in Southern California) but I've tried every way around it.

It's sad, as much as I LOVE working for MAC there just aren't enough hours and I can't seem to land a perm position (a lot of competition here 3 slots, 40 applicants

) I may have to give up the dream and search somewhere else. I'm going crazy only working one weekend a month. I need to work and unfortunately now is not a good time for on-call/freelance artists for MAC. There are just no hours.

Yeah! Thats what I thought, I know freelancers that work for multiple lines, and the CM knows (its in the same store) and she is still allowed to work w/ them cus she isnt permanent. So I am not sure why they wont let you.

I can understand the conflict of interest being a permanent employee but not as a freelancer. how strange.

Many moons ago when i did the freelance group interview - they asked before the process really got started if anyone worked or freelanced for any other line. Once answered - they made all those who answered 'yes' to get up and leave because it was against policy for anyone to do both in any capacity.
