Ok well I had posted a thread after my interview but it got moved and I guess was then overlooked so I'll just ask again in hopes that someone reads it...

I thought the interview was for a freelance position but come to find out it's for a part time position..Which is totally awesome but she then told me 85% of the staff is part time and it's nearly impossible to get a full time position. Can someone tell me why this is?

Is it because they don't want to have to give anyone benefits?

How do people survive with just a part time job? All MAC employees have to work 2 jobs? I know I would not be able to survive only working part time but how does everyone juggle a second job when the part time MAC schedule isn't a weekly set schedule and it changes all the time?

I wanted to grow with the company and definitely eventually become full time but she made it sound like that rarely EVER happens...it makes me think twice. It would be GREAT to just work for MAC and live comfortably doing so...but how is that when it's only part time. Hmm.....

Note - your thread was merged into this one as it relates to this topic - it's one of the things we do to keep a very high volume forum organized.

It really blows, but a lot of places try to get by having as few full time employees as possible.. I know the place I used to work for had 3 full timers+ to work there pt you HAD to have open availability. Figure that one out

omg exactly!! That was actually a question in the interview. "How do you do with change?" and "How is your flexibility because things tend to change quite a bit and we need someone who's flexible"

Um..ok well I can be flexible if that's my only job obviously but if I have to have another one in order to make up for the "full time" then how does that work?

How do the MAC employees do this without getting fired? I don't get it. They all have other jobs that work around their MAC schedule...even when it isn't a set schedule? She made it seem like if I wasn't available for every shift they want to give me then I'd get fired or something. I love mac to death but I dont want to be on pins and needles the whole time. *shrug*

yeah at my store literally only the manager and asst manager were full time with 40 hours. But at mac 30+ hours will get you benefits. I guess how you survive part time is because the pay is really awesome. As long as you're getting more than like 24 hours a week you'll be fine

To be honest when I had MAC plus another job the other Job had to work around my MAC schedule since I got my schedule for the whole month either a month or two weeks in advance before the new month started. Once I got enough hours at MAC I quit my other position.

LC--oh 30 hours is pretty good for benefits! Im sure it's still hard to get the 30 lol. It was so funny in the interview she just kept saying over and over how these part time positions that are available "are so rare." Their are 3 available, one for 22 hours, 24 hours and 30 hours. But she said "to be honest the 30 hour is most likely going to go to someone who gets promoted within the company" which is totally understandable. I guess it's just really hard to get in there! I hope they don't do that with ALL the positions or im SOL! lol

MissSupra--They make the schedule's a month in advance?!?? whoa!

You have a better chance at becoming a perm employee if you start off freelance anyway. I'm afraid I won't get any of the perm positions since there's freelancers applying and they'll most likely hire from within so that's def where you'd want to be. The manager who interviewed me even told me it's highly unlikely the 30 hour position will go to anyone outside of the company so I'd be happy just to be in there =)

I'm actually going to go call them right now to see what's up....It's been a week and they said two...but it cant hurt to call. Plus waiting is the worst ugh.

good luck! if you don't hear back after you follow through don't get discouraged, it seems like it's a busy time for MAC managers right now. (plus it's also prom season)

SO, on to my next question... I know this might be really silly- but when I go to fill out my freelance paperwork what do I wear? Do I dress like it's an interview or just like jeans+ cute shirt? I wasn't really sure.... Any help would be awesome =).

here's my updated experience~

prologue: i had my oral and demo interview 2 weeks ago and they went really well! i called the counter at 11am monday morning to see if they had made any decisions about hiring but the manager was out, so i left a message to call me back.

fast foward to 5pm this past monday.
ok.
so.
i was driving home from the mall of america (i had to preorder stupid marine life which i don't even think i want anymore i just want firecracker! moving on) and i was munching on a protein bar. you know when something melts and then rehardens and probably melts and rehardens again, and you open it and it's all crumbly and not fun? well, that was the status of my stupid zone bar when i peeled back the wrapper.

ok, so we have the bar. and hopefully you have a good visual of that. now, i was also blasting music because ...why wouldn't you? i had given up on the counter calling me back today since it was already so late. i was crabby about that, and i was also irritated with my crumbling zone bar, so i shoved the last 1/3 in my mouth. (i'm a keeper, eh?) THEN MY PHONE STARTS RINGING?!?!?! and i see it's the counter!

BUT WAIT

i have 1/3 of an effing zone bar in my mouth! EMERGENCY. i brilliantly rolled down my window and attempted to projectile-spit the bar out of my mouth, but i wasn't very good at it. and i don't know if i hit anyone behind me. i kind of slobbered on my car door. THEN I HAD TO RACE TO TURN OFF MY MUSIC so i could answer the phone!

(that was pretty much the good part of the story/experience, so if you're bored you should probably stop reading)
so i answered my phone and blah blah, they ended up hiring from within the company, but i'm on the top of their list!!! she said that the trainer really liked what i did, and that she and the manager were really impressed with me and that they said they're trying to rearrange hours and to call back in three weeks (if they haven't called me by then). so... i'm still hopeful!

THE END

MAC Interview TOMORROW w/ Homa

Hi everyone,
I been super busy with finals this week, but now that it's over I finally have a chance to post my first thread. My big day is tomorrow! It's my MAC interview with Homa, the regional manager for the dc/md/va area. I'm extremely nervous yet anxious for this day. I needed to know what to expect and what is expected of me as far as presentation such as attire(& I know all black), make-up and hair. Thanks beauties and wish me luck
