So I went to the mac store to grab a few things that I wanted. So this girl came up to me and was like you need any help and im like "no im fine". Then she was like would you like me to put make up on you with our new line etc etc. Then I was like oh cool it would look great!
So she put some light shadow on my lid then DARK shadow above my lid bone however you call it, and this dark brown eyeshadow on my eyebrow to make it look darker ya know. I looked in the mirror and was like what the hell! I look like a monster. But i didnt say that out loud. I was like "oh the COLORS look pretty". Then this girl comes in and was like to her bf "oh I want to do that to my eyes". And her bf looked at me like "uhhhh i dont thinkso". It was embarrasing.
Thinking that she worked at MAC with cosmetic experience she would do good on me but it was UGLAYY.

Same thing happened to me, I went to an event at Nordtrom's, and this girl that was beautiful... flawless make-up, I am talking perfect, did my make-up for me. I wanted to cry it was so terrible... Super dark, almost black e/s on my brows. Way too much eye make-up. I told her to do a cat-eye on me, somehow she heard smokey eye... I had dark e/s around and under my eye... horrible. I have tiny eyes as it is, smokey is not working for me. It was horrible. Too much blush... I can't remember the color, it would have worked had she put about half that much. It sucked so bad!!! When I got in the car, I sat in the mirror and wiped practically all of it off. My friends daughters (ages 12, 10, 8, and 6) even said that it was gross!!! They were all like "Don't go to her again!!!" Trust... I won't!!!

I went in on my birthday to have a makeover and an MA that I don't like, but does good work did it. I looked like a drag queen. When I got home I took another look so that I could be sure it wasn't just me. It still looked horrible. But I figured it might not be as bad as I thought and I didn't have time to do it over so I went out as planned. This was back in May. I just finally got around to developing those pics and I looked so bad. LOL!! The whole thing - the outfit, the hair, the makeup. I looked like I was in bad drag!

Yeah that sucks I mean these girls they have beautiful make up on them but when they do make up on some people it just turns out bad! it was horrible my mom saw it cause she was there and said I looked like a monster so she took it off in front of the lady that did my make up lol. But I didnt want to like be mean so I was like "I liked it the colors looked nice". haha I was trying to be nice.

I'm sorry that your experiences were bad... this is really why I never want to work for MAC as a sales associate.
ssad.gif
So many customers don't let the MA's know when to stop, etc. and they get no feedback or criticism and continue to make the same mistakes, and customers always end up unhappy. It's almost like a no-win situation since the customer is worried about being mean, they are more likely to end up with a look that they are unstatisfied with.

omg, this so happened to me too!! it was for my school ball/ dance and i had a really cool green dress on, and so the MA decided to match e/s colours with my dress which i was totally fine with cos thats what i wanted.... but the application of it was absolutely hideous!!
I have asian eyes- no crease or anything and so the worse thing to do with my eyes is to treat them like "normal" eyes and try to make a crease..... general rule-DON'T!! But she did, and i ended up looking like a clown
ssad.gif
. She put tons of pink blush on me so that i truely looked even more abnormal, and when i aksed for her to tone it down a bit she sighed really heavily started muttering... i was honestly about to cry cos my eyes looked crap and she wouldn't let me change what i didn't feel comfortable with!!! i got so angry... i felt so ugly that night
ssad.gif
But my beautiful shoes, dress and date made up for it i guess

I had a bad experience once too, I remember getting my makeup done for a night out and I was made up like a big, silver mirrorball. Silvers and greys everywhere on my eyes. (I'm a redhead for godssakes) and then the shimmer, oh the shimmer....just way too much of it! I ended up buying colors she didn't use (just ones I knew I needed), and then tried to sneak out of the store without anyone seeing me (I was SO embarrassed!!)

I immediately took off everything when I got home and did my makeup the way I wanted it.

Yeah me too. The lady did the same thing with nightrain and some color that looked like amber lights. Then she used a light color on my lid. It was soo bad. Like what you said she tried to make it like I had a crease on my eye which I didnt so Im always use to dark shadows on my lid but this time it was the other way around and I looked like a "monster". Not a clown...a "monster". First thing when I saw myself in the mirror I was like to myself I look like a monster lol. Then my mom said is out loud "i dont like it you look like a monster". Then she laughed at me. It sucked.

i really think a lot of people have insecurities about doing their faces a certain way. obviously mua's dont know your insecurities so they are gonna put on you what THEY think will look good. overall, i say communication is key. no you dont want to be mean to your MA, but communicate and let them know ahead of time what you want. i find a lot of people like to TRUST their MA with "oh just get creative i trust you!" UMM NO! tell them exactly what you want! if you dont like heavy blush or dark lipsticks say "hey i dont like heavy blush or dark lips i prefer something more neutral..." i doubt they will argue with you. they want to make their customer happy. happy enough to buy the products they used!

i know my friend has lots of horror stories of people not liking the makeup or wanting something different... sometimes shes had to change peoples makeup a couple times before they were happy with it. like i said, communication is key

Yep, exactly! I do want my MA's to get creative if I go in and feel like getting pampered, I tell them no smokey eyes,..stay away from darker blue,.. it is hard to make work with my skin tone, and I don't like too much blush but shimmer is good,.. and they usually do great. And I have had a really good experience each time,.. its how I found my soul-MA's. If I had a bad one I'd have to let the MA know,...in a polite way.

i was always so intimidated by the MAC counter just because of their eccentric makeup.... but they always do an amazing job on me. they know what i like/dont like at my counter and they're totally awesome! i never ever would tell them to be creative, because while it looks good on them - i know i'd hate it!

I totally agree with you, very well said. However in my case alone, this was 10 years ago and one of my first "professional" makeovers...so I was a little intimadated to say the least, and ended up not saying anything. If it were now though, I'd totally let them know if I wasn't happy with it (or if I was)

I've had mostly good experiences with MAC MAs (my most recent with littlemakeupboy, who did an awesome job), but my WORST experiences were always with the Clinique ladies (when I was young, I used to just go to them before we had MAC in my city) for formal events. I was looking at my sophomore semi-formal pictures from about nine years ago (before I was really fully initiated into the ways of doing makeup), and I don't know what she was thinking! I was wearing a dark purple dress, and the woman put some sage green eyeshadow on me from my lashline right up to my brow with thick brown eyeliner and bright pink lipstick (which did not match the green eyeshadow at all) and a big ol' smear of coralish blush over a foundation which was too dark. Scary!

I had the same thing done to me with the Inventive Eyes quad..it's ok that eveyrone has different tastes of how eye makeup should be done..but i was really alarmed by the heavyness of the application she did on me, especially 'crease' she did with the Inventive eyeshadow, it was very thick in general and even thicker in the middle, atleast 1cm in thickness! I looked like a drag queen and it nearly put me off buying the quad.

Preach!

Look in a hand mirror while they are doing the makeup, and if you see it starting to look like MiMi from The Drew Carey show, let them know you are not comfortable.

Working at counter doesn't always mean they will do a good job.
Sorry you had a bad experience.
At least you can wash makeup off!
I always get worried when gals at the BeneFit counter want to do my m/u. They REALLY like to go all out!

I 100% agree with you, communication is defintely the key on both sides. Some of you may know I was a MAC MA for 5 years in Los Angeles. I regularly got told by my manager and my trainers that my own makeup was "too natural"..haha...but when dealing with customers, the first thing I would ask before putting anything on them was "What sort of look do you prefer?" and "What sort of colours do you normally wear?" then we could go from there.

I would ask questions throughout the whole process, to get a feel for what they liked, wanted and expected. I think if you communicate with them and they communicate with you, then you can both be happy. I would also ask at the end, "Do you want more/less of anything? Anything you want to add or change?" Within reason of course..:p

I actually preferred for them not to look until the end because some people get nervous half way through and think it's going to look a certain way, but they're not seeing it in context. I always do eyes first, but they look best once the whole face harmonises with it. I realise trust is a huge part of the whole experience, like any relationship.
