Sorry for my ignorance, but if one wants a makeover do you have to pay for it? If yes, how much? If no, do you have to make a purchase? And is no, do you tip them? Sorry, I am sooooo new to the world of m/u.

If it's at a counter you do not have to pay for it but there is the promise purchase of $45.00...however, at freestanding and pro store you DO have to pay for it, but there isn't a promise purchase.

from hearing everyone's responses, i'd say ask your counter/store whatever, because the answers i've seen vary from my store. my freestanding requires a $40 fee, which is used towards your product purchase. i've heard everything from $40-70, so i would definately call.

Hmm.. One time I went to MAC, and bought a tube of Uberpeach. I asked my MA to do a full make over on me, minus the eyeshadow. But she did it, and I didnt have to pay 45?

well i guess it varies where you go and everything... because at my store and counters they require you to have a 45.00 purchase... but idk about everywhere else....

i've had a friend who got a makeover once and didnt buy much... it also depends on the MA you get i guess....

At my local counters it's $40 which goes towards your products. At the freestanding stores it's $50 but you get a free mascara ($10 value). I've only had to pay if I made an appointment, if you just go in and you're looking for new products and you ask them to try them on you, they usually won't charge you. I've had many free makeovers done, but I end up spending way more than $40 anyways.

i think it also depends on whether you make an appointment, etc. if you make an actual appointment for a complete makeover, like you're going out or something, afaik, you have to pay/buy stuff. but i know i went in one night and it was really slow, and she did a full makeover on me and i didn't have to pay. but i did buy stuff. just depends on how busy it is, i guess.

all depends on the counter.

it's usually upon artist availability.
if you make an appointment you get that guaranteed time with an artist...but if you just come up and ask for something, you really can't get mad if she/he has to step away or something to help others.

but really, i've never seen someone walk away not lovin' theri make up

and they usually buy most or all of the look

I would ask your counter/store. My counter has a strict 4 product purchase minimum for a full face, we dont have a set price like $45.

Tipping is not expected but always appreciated! (coming from the MA ahahha)

great question, when I went to the Nordie MAC counter she did my eye makeup to show me some tips, but didn't charge me (although I bought 6 e/s & a brush), but I haven't yet asked anyone to do my makeup in the freestanding MAC store near me. I would like to, but they're always sooooo busy & crowded & I'm also afraid of having to pay for it!

How come when I got my first makeover she didn't charge me and didn't tell me that I had to buy something?

At MAC counters it is with a $40 purchase.
At MAC Stores it is a $40 app fee with free mascara and a $90 fee for a 90 minute lesson which also entitles you to a 20% product discount for 30 days.
Many times artist do eyes for a customer or even sometimes a full face if time and floor coverage permits!! Remeber though, you get back what you give-so if you a friendly and patient an artist is more likely to give you all the attention you desire!!!!Kindness also will guarantee a relationship with an artist that is longlasting-My theory is it's only make-up and it should be fun and chill and since I dont make commission, I would rather a customer leave happy with a couple things they love with a smile on there face than a bag full of glitter mouse and glitz gloss and resent me(hehe)

At Nordstrom, you can get your makeup done at any counter (including MAC) and not have to purchase anything at all...that is official company policy. Lately, some of the Nordies MAC counters have begun implementing a minimum purchase as too many people take advantage of the "free application" and don't buy a thing, which affects the MA's sales numbers (they are there, after all, to sell). They also implement the minimum purchase during prom season.

robbaselight- Is that at all freestanding stores or just counters/specific stores? I know I'll be spending that much sometime in the future all at once, and I plan on getting my mom I a makeover.

But when I went to the freestanding store you just had to buy $60 worth of product after your makeover.

It's smaller than a facechart. It has a larger picture of the eye so you can really see the detail of the eye makeup.

Interesting how there are different policies between stores.
The freestanding store I used to visit (before I moved to a MAC-less world) didn't require a $40 free. I had a couple makeovers there, once with an appointment (for an event) and once or twice without an appointment and didn't have to pay anything up front. However, I did spent close to $100 on each visit.

I think Nordies might be different than other depart. stores. MAC Stores have application w/ purchase during events and the MAC website gives the dates when that happens. But to get a scheduled app. at a MAC store there is a fee. That way you get 1 on 1 time with an artist uninterupted.
