MAC Virgin in need of ideas

Alas, I have reached my fifties and am still a MAC virgin!

If you have recommendations for the first six or first twelve MAC products to get a Newbie started, I'd adore seeing your ideas!

Here are the guidelines:

1. No I don't plan to replace my skin care or foundation items. (Don't worry much about my age. I practice great skin care, sun protection and sun avoidance and have very very little to worry about in the way of wrinkles or crepiness.)

2. I have a cool skin tone and I adore Purple and Pink. I prefer the blue-violet side of purple over the red-violet.

3. I love a three color eye plan.

4. I'd love a recommendation for blush and lipcolor coordinated to eye colors.

5. Is the MAC Pencil Brush entirely different from the CVS Crease Brushes? If so that might be my first MAC brush.

Thank you!

It might help if you gave us some inkling of your skin tone?

Do you like bright colours, or prefer to be a bit more subtle?

I'll go with what I love based on my pale skin.

First off, you'll need a base if you don't already have one for your eyeshadow - try Bare Canvas paint (my favourite) or Bare Study paint pot.

My favourite highlighter for everything is Blanc Type - it's a pale creamy beige, matte2 finish. Great payoff and very smooth. Love it to bits. Goes with everything.

Poison pen has been discontinued, but it was a recent thing and you should probably still be able to get it (I know it's still definitely on the Canadian site). It's another matte2, blue based purple, and a lovely shade, especially in the crease. I imagine that Parfait Amour (a blue-violet with some shimmer) on the lid with Poison Pen in the crease and Blanc Type to highlight could be rather pretty.

If you can still get Lotusland from Starflash, that's a beautiful light pinky purple with a smooth texture.

Sable is a lovely plummy brown, Knight Divine is a gorgeous blue gunmetal grey type colour, Humid is a gorgeous deep green. All have some shimmer. For another matte2 (can you tell I love these things?), there is the grey Copperplate. A pro purple I adore is Indian Ink.

Crystal is a pretty very pale grey-purple. It would look lovely with Poison Pen, Indian Ink or Copperplate in the crease. For a dark blackish purple, Graphology is good (again with the matte2).

I don't know if you could still get it, but I know it's still on the CDN site: Neutral Pink. Works well a number of things for a muted look. Shale is a nice, muted purple, too.

Hmmm... Unfortunately, a lot of what I have is LE and I am be no means a pink lover. All of my favourite blushes are LE, and I like super intense lipstick colours. However, one permanent lipstick I like is the plummy Amplified Creme called Craving. Chatterbox is a fun pink, too.

^^ I love Bare Canvas paint as a base too. Humid is a beautiful green colour, if you like gold, try Gorgeous Gold. It goes very well with Humid.

Beautiful Iris and Purple Haze are two great purple shades.

As for highlights, try Shroom, Vanilla and Ricepaper. They're great colours.

I like Cubic blush a lot. It's a beautiful shade and it goes well with most lip colours. I wear it to work almost everyday.

Crystal was one of my first eyeshadows when beginning with MAC. I've added Nocturnelle, Top Hat (Starflash), and Parfait Amour (wearing it today!) to the collection now.

My favorite blush as of late is Stark Naked from Red She Said.

Thank you Ladies!

Sanayhs, mine is a fair to barely medium cool skin tone depending upon the season, so your ideas should be perfect! Parfait Amour sounds irresistible! I love brights and am not afraid.

Kittykit, Beautiful Iris sound delightful!

Hawaii, a second vote for Parfait Amour! I'll go look that up first.

Thank you all so much!

Any thoughts about the pencil brush? I gather it is a must have from the videos I see on U-tube. I just wonder if it is truly different from the crease brushes I have.

just to quickly answer your pencil brush question..
Liking the 219 overall depends on your preference and eye shape/size..I have quite a lot of lid space so I don't use the 219 for crease colors as its really difficult to blend out. Some ppl use it to put color under the lower lashline but i find its way too big for that on me! So...really this brush works well if you want a small detail crease brush (like if you watch Jennisse's makeup videos on Youtube, you can darken the crease with the 219 and a lil bit of carbon) and its Fab for that! For me, its the only eyeshadow brush i keep in my bag with me all the time..because in a cinch it can multitask as an eyeliner smudger, all over color brush, a blending brush..but tahts only to save myself some space..I would prefer to have my usual brushes to do those things. Hope that helps!

Hey AJ!!! You have gotten some GREAT suggestions, so I will just throw in my two cents since I am pretty familiar with your colour preferences.

You NEED Pink Freeze ... it is very similar to BEs 1960s or your beloved Bikini, but more icey than Bikini.

Top Hat from Starflash is a great dark pink ... it is darker and richer than your face Queen Marie but with the same basic smoky purple tone. It is similar to Brocade in darkness, but without the gold sparkle.

Parfait Amore is GORGEOUS ... like a darker version of BEs Gigi with more purple than blue. I love this colour.

Beautiful Iris is alot like Princess, but again richer in colour. Of course, pretty much ALL MAC shadows are richer in some degree than the BE colours that you and I are used to.

You might also want to look at Stars N Rockets (alot like BEs Wildflower) ... and in an entirely different vein Humid is a GREAT green that is like Oz but without the sooty base.

As for the 219, it is way to small to use for a crease brush IMO, but is great for detailing. I like using it for the inner corners of my eyes and blending into the crease, lower lashline, etc.

I agree with the others - the MAC pencil brush is great for detailing around the eye, but would not take the replacement of a crease brush.

I agree that Shroom is a great highlighter, and an all around versatile shade in general. The Matte2 formula in MAC's eyeshadows is wonderful - I totally agree with the recs from Sanayhs. Satin Taupe is an essential for most anyone, I think. One of the best shades in the MAC permanent collection.

Also, I agree that you would love the 6 Cool Eyes palette that is currently available with MAC's holiday collection. The colours are right up your alley, I think.
