When I first came on this site I remember watching a video tut where someone mentioned that you can make your own mixing mediums. Does anyone know how to do this?

The Suggestions & Questions forums is for questions regarding the actual forum, rules, questions to the Staff, etc.

The Recommendations forum is for cosmetic & makeup questions, so I have moved your thread here.

As to your actual question, I know people use Visine or eye drops for mixing medium.

i've read 3 parts water:1 part glycerin-which can be bought at any pharmacy store, walmart, etc

yep. 3 parts water and 1 part glycerin is the easiest way for me.

side note: target doesn't sell glycerin. save yourself the trouble of going there lol

I like visine. Too much glycerine=bad and i'm scared of trying that but visine is obviously eye safe.

It'll do that and if you have pigments.. most people like to use mixing medium with pigments to make them less of a hassle.
Try not to get the visine into your eyeshadow if you can help it! It won't kill anyone but it'd be better if it didn't happen.

I tried mixing a drop of visine with my pigments last night and it turned out gorgeous! Today I wore golderaire as a shadow with wedge in the crease and Femmi-Fi as the high light for a light eye look, and the pigment turned out perfect. I love this trick with Visine. Does anyone know how long it'll last when you make a little bit of it. . .

hey i wear contacts and i used to use visine all the time. i heard it's not safe for your eyes if you use it everyday. the directions say you're only supposed to use it "x" amount of times or something. i heard that when you use this to get rid of the redness in your eyes, it actually makes your eyes dependent on it so you have keep using it to get the redness out. it like constricts your blood vessels or something? i don't know if this is true... but i guess you guys can google it if you're interested in finding out more.

What exactly is bad about glycerine and what is considered 'too much'?

Even if its just around your eyes & not in your eyes?

What are some recommendations for applying this? Do you wet your brush w/the mixing medium then pick up the pigment or do you apply a few drops to some pigment that you've placed in the lid?
Any tips would be helpful because I find that I have trouble applying it evenly to my lids especially when layering & blending
I'm currently using a stiff flat brush to apply them so maybe thats the problem...?

^^ I wet my brush (you want it a little more wet than damp, but not soaking wet), and then I pick up the pigment. A 239 brush is good to apply pigments with. You could also add a few drops of MM, and then apply pigment to it, and mix together. It depends on what you prefer.

FYI, there's nothing bad or harmful about glycerine... as for there being "too much", I'd assume in improper mix of it with the water would make it too sticky.
