Migranes

What's the best cure for a migrane? I've had one steady on the left side of my head for about a week. I've taken asprins and nothing is working. When I do little things like bend over, sit down, stand up the pain just shoots. I can deal with it, but I rather not. I remember as a kid I had a migrane problem and a doctor didn't even do anything about it. Suggestions??

My boss goes to the Chiropractor to help with her migranes. She said it does help a bit. Not sure if that helps you any.

I suffer from migraines and the only thing that works for me is excedrine - works even better then prescribed stuff

Thats what I normally use, but it's not even working this time.

Yup, my hubby gets bad ones and he takes the excedrine migrane. He also has 800mg Mortin from the DR. but tends to take the excedrine more.

when I get like that the only other thing I can do is just sleep....a lot....most of the time my worst migraines are a result of not getting proper sleep though

I get migraines about two or three times a month on average, and no pain killer really ever worked for me (the Excedrine Migraine would dull them a teensy bit, but I still felt the pain when I would stand or move around), so I eventually had to see a neurologist. The first one had me take Neurontin every day, but I didn't really like the side effects. My second neurologist gave me Imitrex, which I tell you is a godsend. About half an hour after I take it, the migraine is totally gone, whereas they used to last for days and I couldn't get out of bed, turn the lights on, read, or even talk to anyone. Wonderful stuff.

I have been having major issues with migraines for about a month. My doctor gave me some packets of Imitrex to sample. This morning at 3:00 a.m., I woke up with aura and the migraine progressed quickly. Once nausea set in badly, I bit the bullet and took an Imitrex. The nausea was gone within 15 minutes and I literally felt the headache lifting shortly thereafter. I feel asleep for an hour and when I woke, it was completely gone.

You mentioned that you dont have health insurance. Have you heard of Healthy NY? It is program for New Yorkers that provides low to no cost health insurance. That may be an option to you.

I hope you find some relief.

Sounds like a cluster headache to me. I had one that lasted for 2 weeks and I finally could not take it anymore and went to the ER (yes, it was that bad) and the doc gave me Benedryl 50mg IV and Reglan IV as well and my headache was gone in less than 2 minutes. I slept like a baby. When I went to my PCP on Monday, she had me take a beta-blocker (Atenolol) for 4 weeks and had me use Reglan & Benedyl (orally) for any break-through HA's. Since then I have been migrane and cluster-headache free....knock on wood.
The thing that was different w/ my cluster HA from my regular migranes was that the normal regiment did not work. NOTHING made it better. IT was this focalized, sharp, shooting pain that was unrelenting. Uggghhhh the agony I went through. LIke someone had a thumbtack and kept trying to shove it into the same spot on my head over and over and over again.
I hope that you are HA free soon. Best wishes

that's a trigger for me too - also skipping meals does me in

Ohh, and as far as triggers go, three big triggers for my migraines, and probably lots of other people as well, are red wine (from the sulfites), beer, and brown liquors (rum, tequila, bourbon, etc). All I have to have is a sip of any of these, and I am guaranteed a migraine. Which SUCKS because I love red wine.

Drinking has never left me with headaches and I haven't drank in over a month. This happened all of a sudden like a week or so ago. It's on the left side of my head along with strong feelings of nausea. I bought the excedrine migraine and it has done nothing. bending over seems to be the worst. the pain just shoots horribly.
