My sucky Thanksgiving :(

I need to let this out...

This is my first thanksgiving as a married lady, and I am Hispanic and my hubby is Caucasian. Well Thanksgiving in my house (in arizona) was a big to do. We had a separate dining table just for holidays. I was always the one to decorate it elaboratly with gold gilded plates, pretty place mats, gold gilded forks and such, wine glasses, etc. By the time I was done, the table looked good enough to be on the cover of a home Mag. We would turn on some Salsa music and my mom and I would start the cooking, and then around 5 we would all go get dressed and prettied up for such a special occasion. Family would begin to arrive around 6 and Thanksgiving dinner was around 7. It was wonderful, and I love making thanksgiving day a special day... I loved serving everyone, and carving the turkey at the dining table and such

Well My family lives in Az and I am in florida which means my first thanksgiving with his family, who I love, they are great, but the way the celebrate is soooooooooo boring

This is how it goes,

the day before they almost make everything except the turkey. Everyone just stays in their pajamas all day, the mom is on her computer most of the day, and the grandma is the one making most of the food, everyone is just watching tv, and then all comes to a climactic end at around 2 o clock in afternoon with thanksgiving Lunch. Thats it...

then everyone resumes doing what they were doing before...

it's just like any other day.

This was sooooo hard for me.

I hardly ate anything becuase I am not used to all those southern dishes like yam casserole, dressing, green bean casserole, and such... I've never eaten that stuff... so after eating very little, I left the table went to my room and cried.

I called my family becuase I was missing them and guess what they were doing!?

Out doon buggying! Having a blast!

Aw I'm sorry. Maybe next year you two can go to your family's house instead? Or maybe you can make some of your own stuff so they can see how you're used to celebrating.

I'd be disappointed too. My family celebrates like yours and goes all out. I'd suggest talking to him about it and tell him that you'd like more input, like maybe for Christmas so you can feel like you're celebrating too.

Sounds like you got one heck of a fun family though! Perhaps you & your hubby can go back home to Arizona for Thanksgiving next year!

And don't feel bad, my Thanksgivings are just as boring as your hubby's family, if not worst lol

When I was younger (18 to 22) I had this good friend of mine who was from Chile, and it was sooo much fun to celebrate with them at their house during holidays and birthdays, so much different from where I come from.

I'm jealous sometimes, because in my family we don't celebrate very much. I always have to come up with plans because if not, they'll just sit and watch tv all night long.

I can't really remember having spent a new years eve celebrating...

It's something I noticed, caucasians we tend to celebrate less
Wonder why

My family doesnt have a big thanksgiving either.
For my moms family, its very quiet. That side is swiss/german, so its a bit reserved. We do the traditional dinner. We cook everything that day (i bake ahead of time) and the men watch tv. typical!

When my dads side of the family used to do thanksgiving, it was... ughh. That side is of irish decent. Most things were prepared in advance (including the turkey. gag) It was loud and obnoxious and loud. did i mention loud?

I always thought thanksgiving was a HUGE deal in the us. It's not quite as big a thing in Canada, especially in Quebec (a lot of francophones don't celebrate it). Maybe next year you could negotiate to visit you're family, or invite them to you. If not, maybe you could throw the thanksgiving dinner. Tell his family that you;d like to host the dinner if possible, and show them how you're family has always done it, tell them you'd like to try cooking together as a family and organize an event for after. If they really hate it, well you've tried.

Well... I'm not one to complain, but just know you're not alone! And be THANKFUL you have that family even if you couldn't spend today with them. It's just my mom and I - that's it. It's really tough... any holiday... because they all pretty much are a bore and leave me feeling empty, but I always manage to turn that around and be thankful for having such a wonderful mother in my life who tries as hard as she does. (As the years have past, our relatives have moved up north, just stopped inviting us to get togethers, etc...)

- sends hugs -
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone
