Nail polish and pigment?

I am not sure where to put this but...
I am wanting to make some new nailpolish colors by using clear polish and adding pigment, but I have no idea how much to add. I would be using the mini bottles of polish you can get at walmart for $.99. I forget the name of them right off hand. Would 1/4 tsp. be too much or too little? If anyone has made nailpolish, what colors did you make? Got any pictures?

i have made blue brown, accent red, apricot pink. For a mini bottle i'd say 1/4 teaspoon, but to be safe add a little at a time until you get the intensity you like..also swipe a coat on your nails as you go to check the opacity.
The pigment also doesn't stay mixed in the bottle if you set it down for a while, so you might have to role it around in your hands before you use it.
HTH!

Pumpkincat has good suggestions Audrey...also, if you can, it is better to use clear n/p that has those little mixing balls in it, that way you can mix the pigment around in it easier.

Add bit by bit of the pigment into the nail polish and mix, once you get the intensity you want you can stop! Quite hard to give a specific amount to use since some people might want it lighter or more intense. Have fun!

I recently added some Pink Bronze pigment to my L'Oreal nail polish.
the original colour is called Physique it looks like this

and after adding a little bit of the pigment, it changed the colour a little, but made it warm, instead of the cool pink it was before.

here's a little example of what i did with photos

voila.

just use a popcycle stick and put a bit of pigment on the end. eyeball it. use a small amount, and go up in small steps until the right colour is achieved.

@ Ch33tah: great idea to use the paper as a funnel! That looks so neat! I once tried mixing pigments into nailpolish and it was such a mess and more got spilled on the table than into the polish. Because I just poured it into the bottle ... Stupid little me

Great post Ch33tah! I think I might try adding some Melon to one of my pastel pink sheer polishes, it would look nice.

FYI, someone on MUA said they were able to dupe Black Satin by adding MAC metallic pigment to Milani Black Magic polish. She made sure to say that it has to be metallic, not frost.

im also thinking that if you just wanted to try it once and not ruin a whole bottle experimenting, you can maybe put some nail polish in one of those sample pots and mix in the pigment and just use that amount to paint your nails. then you can wash off the brush and put in back in the original nail polish bottle and then next time you can make a whole new color.

I haven't tried this yet (but I plan to soon; I'll post pics when I do), but it's possible to mix Pearl Ex pigment powders (link: http://www.jacquardproducts.com/products/pearlex/), which are much cheaper than MAC pigments [but not usable for face or body because they don't have a cosmetic rating] with nail polish. There are a lot of colors available (40), and they are available at many arts and crafts stores. They can be bought individually, or in sets of 12 or 32 different colors.

The one I saw used Platinum pigment but I would assume silver would work as well. She posted a pic on MUA and it looked amazing, just like Chanel Black Satin. I'm sure there are less expensive pigment brands you can use, I just wouldn't know what to recommend.
