i was just wondering how long a person should keep a bottle of nail polish before it goes funky? i am not really one to wear alot of nail polish but i do have some favorite colors that i want to keep and just get rid of the rest. but i dont know how long nail polishes keep for. i know that they are liquid and you shouldnt keep liquid based makeup pass a certain amount of time. can someone please help me out with this?

i figure it this way
a) no earthly being can open the cap without animal sacrifice to a god
b) the polish is rock hard
c) the polish is so old its a color that i am nowadays dead embarassed to say i own

I say the same as Ivy, and I'm a tech. If it's still a decent consistency, keep it. I have some polishes that were rescued 5 months after Katrina and I still wear them (mostly as my way of saying FU to her, LOL).

I have almost every single bottle i have bought in the past ten or so years. they all work perfectly, it's all about how you treat them!

Polish can last for years and years! Sometimes you need to thin it out a bit (restore it) when it becomes too thick, but as long as you store them right they should last you a long time!

Nail polish never goes bad...if it gets thick and goopy just apply a few drops of Seche vite restore and the polish is good as new

Don't waste thinners on cleaning up bottles though! For cleaning up the bottles, I always use neat acetone, I buy it at the chemist, and it will just carve through those chunky gunks around the top of the bottles!

My oldest polish is probably (I hope so!!) older than me, it's a mid/late 80's Yardley in heather blush, with the most hideous tacky gold lid/brush ever!! <3

As long as there are no chunks it's probably okay! I know there are a few restore products out there (Seche restore) that can make polishes get back to a better consistency, but I'd only do that if you really love the color.

Polish doesn't really go funky, you can almost always restore it. Thinner is a must for everyone who owns nail polish at all.

Couldn't agree more! Those are the same rules I follow regarding the longevity of my nail polishes.

Hell, I even have some that fall into category (a) - but I keep them in hopes that ONE day I might crank them open
