nasty hair buildup

i tend to get a lot of buildup in my hair (right at the back of the scalp / "crown" area, i guess) and it's really disgusting. i know i could use a clarifying shampoo but i'm afraid it might strip away the color in my hair, so i was wondering about any home remedies that you ladies use to remove buildup. i know there are like 874564987465465145461 ways, but i'd like to know what works for you.

I get the same thing, and honestly I just use a drug store clarifying shampoo once a week, focusing on the roots. It doesn't affect my hair color (I dye my hair blue black) and helps get rid of the gunk that would weigh my hair down otherwise.

This forum mentioned one that I tried called Prell... before Prell (which I use roughly once a week depending on how my hair feels)... my hair use to get yucky often and I would switch product to product... but this one I've used for about 9 months and I'm pretty happy.

do you know if it strips away from colored hair?

I've never had any problems.... but I do know someone mentioned this shampoo once as a recommendation to strip color. I would be scared to even try some of the home remedies because I bet they would have the same properties.... lots of stuff you can put in your hair for clarifying but I'm not sure if it would be any better..... white vinegar and lemon juice wash is one I've heard of?

If you got your hair color done at a salon call and ask them what they recommend and emphasize that you feel like your hair is really residue-y. Anytime I do anything to my hair... like hair dyes... I use a clarifying shampoo first. It is possible that too much dye was used and clarifyign and stripping some of it away is a good thing? If you did it at home call the hotline on the box and ask for suggestions.

I have to clarify my hair often which is why I hate using hair dye.... and I don't even use any products... try switching shampoos my friend who always has colored hair uses once a week - nexus gentle clarifying shampoo... and has also used matrix logics clarifying shampoo... but she always follows it with a hair color extender by redken... and I think she uses it pretty regulary.

Sorry if this wasn't much help... personally for me since I dye my hair pretty close to my hair color I don't loose too much when using a clarifying shampoo.

For nasty build up I use Apple Cider Vinegar as a clarifier. There's not a thing wrong with most home remedies...ACV won't strip your hair of it's color and it's actually very gentle (and cheap

). Try this:

To remove styling product buildup: you can create your own clarifying shampoo by adding a couple tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to any bottle of shampoo (if you don't want the ACV in the bottle mix the two in a small bowl or cup). The result: super-shiny, squeaky clean hair with no more product buildup! Note: you can also add the ACV your fave conditioner, as well.

To prevent hair color from fading: you can create your own "color-safe" shampoo and/or conditioner by adding a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to any bottle of shampoo or conditioner to prevent your expensive, salon-color from fading too fast (especially hair that is dyed red!). It prevents hair dye from fading because hair dyes are alkaline and the ACV is acidic, so it helps seal the cuticle by normalizing the PH balance of your hair!

And if you're hesitant to try adding ACV to your shampoo or conditioner because you worry about the smell, I promise that your hair is *not* going to smell like a salad -- you can actually hardly smell the ACV in your shampoo because it's usually masked the the fragrance in most typical shampoos, and even then, once you rinse the shampoo from your hair, the smell is gone anyway.Good luck with it!
