Yes I'm getting all grown up (off to university) and I want a makeup haul to clean out and renovate my makeup case.
I'd like to go to MAC for a makeup demo/look... anyone done that before? What did you think of the experience? Do you know how much they would charge me? (live in Canada)
Any suggestions for looks would be helpful too!

I've never had a full makeup application at MAC, but I've gone to MAC stores or counters a few different times for help with eyeshadow application/choosing eyeshadows. It's the best thing I ever did! I learned so much from the makeup artists (both in terms of how to pick colors that go together and how to apply eye makeup), and they helped me pick some wonderful colors that I probably never would have picked for myself (like Cranberry eyeshadow). One of the makeup artists also helped me pick what is now one of my favorite lipglasses, Lovechild.

I honestly don't know how much/if you get charged for a full makeover. I never got charged for help with eyeshadows, but I always bought about 3-4 shadows at a time when I've been helped.

I highly recommend going to MAC for advice on new makeup!

I think if you get a makeover from MAC (like with an actual appointment and everything) you have to buy $45 of products or something?

Although I honestly don't know that I'd get one there. They tend to be heavy-handed with makeup, and you might look draggy. Draggy looks great on guys, but not so much on the ladies.

I had my make-up done not too long ago for our university formal, and to be quite honest, I actually though I could have done a much better job than the MA did. Which may be due to the fact that I was older than her and I've been wearing make-up since I was 12 (yeah...if you count all the various dance training and shows, it's since I was 5...eep). I actually went home and redid a lot of what she had done. However, this was one experience and many people are very happy with the way their looks turn out.

If you really want to have your make-up done (which is quite a good idea, IMO, it's fun, and you can get a different perspective on your own face...see how something may work for you that you never thought would), my advice is to ask around and see who the "good" artists are. Before I had gone to get my make-up done, I had some time to kill so I went to a few really trendy clothing stores in the same mall. I mentioned to a few sales clerks at each store that I was going to get my make-up done, and every girl that said she had had her make-up done at that location said to ask for an MA named Amy. They said she was by far the best, and the fact that so many girls recommended the same MA sounded good to me. Unfortunately she wasn't in the day I went, but it's never hurts to do a little recon if you're strapped for cash like I was in university and can't afford multiple make-overs

. Also, when you book your appointment, tell them the sort of look you're going for, and HOPEFULLY they'll set you up with a MA they know is good at that particular look...since not EVERY MA is going to be awesome at EVERY look...I'd like to think so, but I suppose that's dreaming...we can't all be amazing at everything, each MA is going to have a particular area of extra expertise.

Also, if you go to a MAC counter at a department store, such as The Bay, you only have to buy $45 worth of make-up and you still get your facechart, while at a free-standing store you pay $50 for the make-over, facechart, and a "free" mascara (the $50 is not a minimum purchase, this is the cost of the make-over).

Even though *I* had a negative experience does not mean that I don't think you should go, I just want you to learn from my mistakes

. And if you've decided against going for a make-over, the MAs are always very helpful in choosing shades for you, and at giving you suggestions on how to wear them, and what to wear them with. Also, in case you didn't know, the MAs will usually let you try on colours for free. So like, if you wanna try out a lipstick they can help you out, or if you wanna try out an eyeshadow (hahaha...maybe you can get a free make-over this way, go to a different counter for each part of the face until you've got full free make-up...hmm, I'm a genius, hahaha). Also, a bunch of counters will also give you a free sample of certain products, like a single application of pigment or paint.

Good luck, have fun!

I had my makeup done and I felt like they applied it really really heavy, the eyeshadow was amazing but the foundation was way to thick and the lips looked horrible...it was cool though seeing how someone else would do my makeup. I had to buy $45 dollars of products and the makeover was free i guess. They were very talented but i think they didnt quite understand what i was really going for.

At my store it's $35 worth of makeup. I've gotten 3 makeovers done and I've been happy with all of them. But I took my friend one time and she was extremely unhappy with it. To each her own I guess. But if you're planning on getting a haul, then I'd definitely suggest getting a makeover because it's "free" with it so might as well. Who knows you might actually like the look they give you. But it most likely won't be one you can wear everyday because they're very over-the-top.
