NEW MAC COUNTER - need advice

Okay so hopefully I'm posting this in the correct spot. So here we go ...

On Black Friday MAC opened up a brand new counter at the my local Macy's (Serramonte Shopping Center for you Bay Area ladies) and I just found out about half an hour ago! I'm sooo excited, it's literally down the street from my house. Well I called to see if they were hiring and they said right now what they're looking for is freelancers for their location so she put my name down on the list and said they'll be calling very soon, she said it shouldn't be more then a month from now.

This got me excited because I would love to work so close to my house and if it's a free lance position I'll take it ... considering if I did part-time I wouldn't want to take more then 20 hours. Now all I have to do is wait for them to call for the interview and nail it!

Here's my lil problem, I got a call from a manager at a Nordstroms (20 minutes from my house) and she asked if I was still interested in a part-time position that I applied to months ago. I said yes and she asked me to re-do the online application and then she'd call me this Wednesday. Now that this has come up I'd much rather free lance closer to the hosue then be a perm 20 minutes away. What's a polite way to tell her, I don't want to break ties with a local counter just incase ... you never know.

Can you do both? They are both part time....keep in mind freelance is only seasonal/events usually, so if you need a job I would rec'd the other. JMO!

I'm not sure if she'd be allowed to work at both a Dillard's and a Macy's. I know around here if you work at one department store you can't work at any of their competitors.

MAC opened a bazillion new stores on Black Friday.

You can't freelance and be permanent at the same time, so you have to make the choice. I'm a total advocate of permanent over freelance, but you have to do whatever is best for you.

Either way, whichever one you are turning down, say that you are sorry, but something else came up and you will no longer be able to take the job. They can't hold that over your head, you know?
But make your decision soon so that you have neither place waiting for you.

Unless by "part-time" and Nordie's, you don't mean with MAC...if it's not a cosmetics job, then you can do both! (I'm overthinking this I know)

Ok well it would be a 20 hour part-time position at MAC Nordstroms vs. a freelance position at the MAC counter at Macy's (I'm sure that means freelancing through the region). I am pretty sure that I'd rather take the freelance position for now ... even though I'd love the gratis and stuff ... my school schedule for next semester is a lil crazy and when I told the manager at Nordstroms she said I could work all day shifts Saturday and Sunday but I'd also need to work Friday nights. That's what made me nervous because I get out of school at 5:30 on Fridays so idk how I'd do that.

My main thing is that I don't want to piss off the Nordies manager because I know it's the holidays and they're desperate for someone at that counter. She's supposed to call me tomorrow. Plus if I do get the freelance position who knows if she'd call me to work at her counter if I left her hanging. :-/ The other reason I would perfer to freelance at Macy's and kiss ass until I get a perm there is because I HATE the concept of working on commission. I heard Nordies does and Macy's doesn't. idk I'm just waiting for SOMEONE to call at this point. Thanks ladies.

Well the main thing is figure out what you schdule will be for school and then look at both positions. But, you have to look at things in the long run. Will you be able to get a perm position at the Macy's if one comes up? Or are they just looking for freelancers for their counter? Some counter do that, take people who just want to be freelancers.

Oh really? I mean honestly I wouldn't mind if I freelanced for even an entire year ... my friend did it for 9 months until she was offered a perm position but she didn't take it cuz of school. Hmm maybe I should stop by the counter and speak to the manager then and see if that's the case. Like I said I wouldn't mind working only once or twice a month for MAC I just realistically think it's a better fit for my school schedule now.

So then I hace another question for ya darlin ... freelancers who are hired by specific counters don't freelance anywhere else? And are they usually not offered perm positions when they come up?

What I mean is that some freelancers only want to freelance and they do so well at locations that that location will ALWAYS call them. So that's fine. If you are looking to become perm that's good too. I just dont' want you to go into looking to be come perm when they are fully staffed and are only looking for freelancers for their events.

I freelanced during school cause it was just easier for me....sounds like you're in the same boat.

Talk to the Nordies manager and explain your situation to her. If she is at all understanding she will be ok with that and be completely willing to call you for her freelance events (if you wanted to do that).

Once hired freelance, if you are needing more hours...you can call all the locations in the region that you'd be willing to travel to and be added to their freelance lists.

Ok thanks ladies, I'm gonna speak to the Nordies manager when she calls tomorrow and let her know my situation. I'll probably go and visit the new MAC counter tomorrow too and meet with the manager if she's there. THANKS!
