Paints and alternative storage

Ok, we all know that the paint containers like to squirt all its contents out randomly. When im prepared for it..it doesnt happen, then when my guard is down..there it is..lol. Anyway. I've been just putting the excess in a sample container, and that has been working for the most part. But i realized that i left some in for 3 days and the pant dried in there. I was going to squirt a bunch in a container for everyday use...but now i dont want to if its going to dry out. Does anyone have tips on this, or does anyone squeeze out the paint??

Really, the best thing to do is to leave it in that container. Anything else will dry it out.

Generally if you unroll the end a bit it stops happening, its like there is too much pressure in there.

Unrolling helps me for themost part, but sometimes nothing helps! I do keep an extra mac sample container around ONLY for catching excess paint.. but I would never just put it in there for everyday use.. only when it squirts out accidently.

I unroll the end and squeeze the middle while the cap is still on and I have never had one spill out on me yet

I haven't tried it yet, but this is my suggestion for getting out the desired amount, as opposed to excess.

How about getting a toothpick and inserting it into the tube, using like a mini-spatula? No squeezing involved = no wastage! Well, eventually you'll have to squeeze to get the substance further up the tube but not for a long time.

Let me know if you end up trying, if it works or it sucks. Hope it won't suck for you, I'd hate to think you wasted precious paint because of my failed brainwave!

I think they are referring to the spilling that occurs when you open the paint itself. It happens to me all the time, and it drives me crazy. Unrolling helps relieve pressure, but sometimes I forget to.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Yes I did unroll some and shift the paint further up in the tube..but sometimes they do still ooze...grrr....I've also tried putting it in the fridge for a bit if its a warm day or its been out...and they dont seem to ooze then. Oh well...I thought I had a storage idea..lol...thanks again!

You could get a cottonball or a bit of sponge and wet it and stuff it into the container, then squirt the excess on top. Screw it on really tightly and the moisture should keep the paint alright. That's how to store art paint if it's not in a container so it should work for this.

Yes unrolling help, I agree...

But I have to say this: Between the time you squeeze and paint actually comes out, there a laps of time, so people tend to squeeze harder they should for to long:
result: too much paint comes out.

If you press gently at the bottom of the tube and wait a few seconds, the right amount of paint will come out!!! ( since you need a tiny little bit of it!! )

This aplies to my expensif watercolor or oil tubes: Press gently and wait.. or way to much comes out!!!

I squeezed strips of paints into an empty pigment jar and it NEVER dried out and works better than squeezing a bit out all the time. I use a brush with my paints so I just swipe some color from the jar and I'm good to go! ^_^ I found that it actually softens the paint and makes it more pliable. woot! Here's a picture:

It's not the best picture, but you get the idea.

The little plastic seal in the lid helps keep it airtight thus not drying it out.

This is what I do, but with my mini paint brush and I find that none gets wasted.

i had a problem once with my paint but i know the trick, haha....what i just usually do is that i squeeze gently and scooped off the paint and put the cap back right away.

I also had the dry out problem when I used a screw top container. I found the snap on lid paint wells at Michael's and they have been working better. I'm talking about the kind that are joined in rows and sometimes the lids are joined as well. Thats been good for a few weeks, but I always forget to go back and use them :p
