Playing up cheeks?

I wasn't too sure where to post this, so feel free to move if needed.

On a couple of my posts lately, I've been told to 'play up' the cheeks of some of my models.
Normally I just apply blush and some highlighter to the cheek bones.

What does playing up the cheeks mean? And what could I do to 'play them up'?

maybe try contouring the cheekbones with a bronzer first? then apply blush brightly and highlight.

I would say countouring would probably be what they mean 'cause I think that brings out cheeks best but I'm honestly not sure. =/
