I get them every single night at the same time. They hurt badly too!

I know I can't be the only one. Anyone else get leg cramps? If so how often?

Make sure you're drinking enough water too. You can eat a banana or supplement with a little potassium. It isn't very expensive.

Do you excercise at all? Were you ever injured on that part of your leg or even your back?

I got them rarely, but since i broke my leg, i get them every morning when i stretch.

it sounds discusting., but drink a swig of Vinegar when they come on. it also helps to pull your toes towards your head the second you feel them coming on,. and if the cramp is in the front muscle, point your toe like a ballerina. Ive gotten so used to feeling them come on i immediatly pull my foot up. so ive avoided them
but I have waken up with them and they HURT!!!
Once at a hotel , during a long road trip, I hadnt been drinking enough water i woke up screaming and my boyfriend was like "What the Hell!?!?!"

eyepromise-thanks for the tip!

Tyster-I did once sprain my ankle really badly - but my cramps are about half way up my calf muscle. I did hurt my back once lifting 80 lb bags of concrete because the pathetic excuses we referred to as lot boys never showed up (noooooooooooooooo I'm not in the least bit bitter! LOL

) But it was only a slight discomfort nothing log lasting.

I try to exercise but here recently I have been counting my running around with my class schedule (another post) as that

I bet it's the water because I dont drink a lot of water but I drink tea instead and I drink a LOT of liquids all the time. I'm always thirsty. I think I have dry mouth LOL

Oh yes, the painful screams are nightly occurance LOL

The ankle sprain could be causing it, as some kind of unhealed injury. But I can't diagnose that as for sure.

However, I can tell you, that not drinking enough water, and drinking other stuff instead could be the cause itself. The only cure is the one you control where you swap a few glasses of tea and whatever else you drink, with water and see if that helps.

Actually, if you all you drink IS tea, then that could be the cause. The water that is contained in the tea doesn't count as water you need to drink for the day for many reasons. But a big one is that, tea usually contains caffiene, which is a diuretic. A diuretic will cause your body to expell any water it can either by sweat or waste. When the body doesn't have enough water, it cannot function properly: therefore we're left with usually one simple solution.

Caffeine is a mild diuretic and can cause dehydration, in turn depleting your potassium levels and causing the leg cramps. Tea, especially sweet tea with all its sugar and caffeine contents, is possibly your culprit. Try cutting back or totally eliminating tea and replace your fluids with water.

Or, you can buy decaf tea and use lemon as a sweetener instead of sugar. That's what I do, and just knowing its better for my body makes me happy! I used to be a sweet tea junkie, btw!

OK, so I just realized Tyester said just about the same thing as me. Sorry about the repetition!

Actually yes. But I've never been much of a health person so this is brand new to me (not really brand new but I'm learning all sorts of crazy things today!)

I used to get them really bad! I haven't had one for a while now though.
They hurt so much!

I cry whenever I get them.

I always stretch my legs as I'm lying in bed though, like flex and point my feet so my calfs get moving!

I hate leg cramps with a passion.

Drink some Tonic Water; it's got Quinine in it, which will help w/ the cramps. Many of my elderly patients try this "old school" remedy, and it's fairly effective.

Also, eating a Banana is a good idea...Potassium controls muscles, and that'll help a lot.

My husband gets major "charlie horse" cramps in the middle of the night..He'll wake up yelling, (which is pretty scary to wake up to!) because it hurts so badly...One of the reasons I think he gets them so much is 'cause he's a Chef, and stands in one place too long....I don't know if that's the case with you, but if it is you may want to walk around a bit and stretch when you can. I told my hubby to stretch before going to bed, and that helps a lot.

Those nightime cramps can be SO painful..and startling when you're woken up from a sound sleep by one!
