I was watching Logo earlier and there was a special called "Power Lesbians" hosted by Rebecca Loos. It was really interesting. Has anyone seen this? It was basically about the idea of the "power lesbian" and if such a thing really exists and if so who are they? They mentioned "The L Word" and its impact on the way that lesbians are seen and that it depicts power lesbians. It also cited its creator/producer Ilene Chaiken as a true example and visited the Dinah Shore weekend in Palm Springs and a ton of other stuff.

Is that the opposite of a 'lipstick' lesbian?

It conjures up images of what is called the 'butch' (i.e. manly) lesbian. I hate those terms and stereotypes though, admittedly.

no, it's not. power lesbians are the ones that do everything: have a career, run a household, have a family, etc. it's like the equivalent of what is a supermom in the straight community. you can easily be a lipstick lesbian and a power lesbian at the same time.

Ah, *penny drops*, thanks for the explanation, msthrope. So sounds a little like the lesbian couple in Queer As Folk? Or, I gather that they are trying to be.

Basically what I gathered was that the "power lesbian" is well dressed, successful, powerful, self-assured, and an overall dynamic person. Like msthrope said think of the ladies from The L Word, Bette and Helena. Or think Brian from Queer As Folk. Although, as I saw on the special the perception is not always the reality.

Power lesbians are business women, not necessarily the opposite of a lipstick lesbian - because many are just that. But they're major power players in many businesses often CEO's or Senior Partners of law firms. Basically "powerful" women who are lesbians. There's a club here that my coworker always tried to drag me to because she wanted a "sugar momma". They have a lot of money and most will spend it on "pretty young things".
