Prickly skin

Hi everyone!

I've been using mineral foundation for a while now and, having experimented with a range of samples, have settled on Everyday Minerals as my favourite. However, all the mineral foundations I have tried (also Alima, Lily Lolo and Fyrrinae) make my face prickly and itchy if my skin becomes even slightly moist (i.e., if the weather's warm!). I've also noticed the problem becomes worse after using certain cleansers and moisturisers - I used a new cleanser immediately before my graduation ceremony a couple of weeks ago and was thoroughly miserable for the whole day because the prickling was unbearable!

I've tried using various anti-oil primers, but these don't appear to help. Can anybody suggest a possible solution?

Thanks,

Cerydwen

You say that you use anti-oil primers but have you tried a primer that would place a barrier between your skin and the makeup (a silicone based primer?). That should help with this and make the makeup last longer too.

You said that some face products make it worse. Some cleansers, moisturizers, etc. react with ingredients in mineral makeup. A primer would help with this.

Does this happen with all of the brands of mineral makeup? I've found that I can't tolerate some brands but others are fine. It may be that you need a different brand...

I'm not sure why, but when I use sunscreen under my makeup, my face gets really itchy if i get hot and sweaty. maybe it's the mineral content in the sunscreen, and your face product? I have no idea why it happens though.

Some people just don't react well to mineral foundation. If you've had this problem with all the mineral samples you've tried, I think maybe it's just not the best option for you.

Arielle, I've just tried using a Smashbox primer, but unfortunately there's no improvement. With regards to the brands of minerals, I've tried Everyday Minerals, Lily Lolo, Fyrinnae and Alima, none of which contain bismuth oxide, which I know is a common irritant. I'm not sure if it's worth continuing to try other brands or not.

There are other things besides bismuth that some people are sensitive too. Some people can't tolerate high amounts of titanium dioxide, some kaolin, some silk. Those are some of the most common that I've heard of.

Which formulas have you tried from those companies? Because they all contain different ingredients/different amounts.

I tried intensive and semi-matte formula from EDM and found that intensive makes my skin itch, slightly burn (and probably makes me break out from that irritation) while semi-matte is ok and I'm still using it.

Thanks Arielle,

I've tried various shades of the 'sheen' formulation from Fyrrinae, Blondie, Candy Cane and Porcelain shades from Lily Lolo (only one formulation available), fair semi matte, multitask original glo and fair medium intensive from EDM and various shades of satin matte foundation from Alima. I've also tried a variety of primers from each company.

I'm not familiar with Lily Lo, but it looks like the satin matte foundation from alima contains high amounts of mica since they're listed first, and according to the EDM website their foundations do too although I couldn't find specifics for the different formulas. I have heard of people having problems with their foundations though.

I do know that fyrrinae has a mica-free foundation. I can only suggest trying that or another foundation that's meant for those who are sensitive. Maybe you're sensitive to mica.

I know that lauress' minimalist and meow's pampered are supposed to be good for those who have been sensitive to other foundations. I'm not sure how true the claim is though.

Mica makes me itch like crazy -- I can only tolerate it if there is enough titanium dioxide in the formula to counteract it. I use Meow Cosmetics Pampered Puss foundation and love it.

Ingredients: Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Iron Oxides
