Professors w/ funny accents...

Ok I've been trying to avoid teachers w/ the funny accents. I just can't understand them! Last semester I got an econ. teacher he was from Kenya he had a strong accent, to top it off he talked fast. And then I had a math teacher who is from russia and had such a strong accent and a mono tone voice it made me go to sleep.

So this semester I tried to avoid those LONG last names that you couldnt pronounce but couldnt find the right schedule so for math I picked a teacher named Thomas Rutanigjadndie....cant spell it. But I had him today and yet another guy who had an accent just like my Kenyan teacher last semester! oh god...its this half bald guy with a lil patched of swirled hair in the front! when he says "or" it sounds like "oral". When he said "multiply" it sounds like "meatyply". I dont know what to do lol. But he is much funny'er and has more character so I think I will do better in his math class.

[Edited] I didnt want to start another post, BUT yeah this semester sucks! damn I had all my classes today and damn my professors are so strict and each of them require two books! omg! 2 books for eng., 2 books for Nutrition, and 2 books for history on civilization. DAMN! I just got 3 USED books today (for math and eng.) and it all added up to $161!! I need to get 4 more books but I have to wait on it NEXT week but I have homework due already next week. This semester wont be as fun as last semester bleh. I wish it was winter break still.

i had an economic teacher from sudan before and he was a pain in the ass to understand. he was cool, but his english wasn't great. he used to say sum funny stuff.. like instead of saying counter clockwise he said anti-clockwise. and with him he made graphs for everything.

oh my gosh! I SO know what you mean. This past fall semester my bio lab prof was from somewhere in Africa (he said where but I forgot). His accent was so thick. And it was so hard to understand him that sometimes in class I would shake my head and look at my friend with a confusing look cause I couldn't understand him! (so glad he never saw me do that!). When he said purple, it sounded more like pehpull. When he said cork it sounded like...well you know... and then he said something about cubular

...is that even a word? I dunno anyway, he couldn't understand anything that we told him either...I believe that he's a good prof and all but dang... at least i passed the class!

Yeah I think these professors with these strong accents are great teachers the only thing that ruins it is their accents! its hilarious sometimes though when they talk.

ha, I remember a friend of mine had a math teacher from India. I think a lot of people failed that class.

Hm, only weird one for me was a New Jersey accent. But I got through it, haha.

Haha, I had one of these too. He was fresh from China, and teaching, of all things, my American Government class. By the time class was over I couldn't even understand my own notes, lol. I ended up dropping the class.
Did anyone ever see the episode of Friends where Ross teaches class with the fake accent? He thought it made his students more interested in the course. This thread reminded me of that.

Normally, I don't mind accents at all, in fact, I like hearing different accents, but I'm so with you on this one! My physics teacher has a very thick accent, I'm guessing Eastern European. Physics is already hard enough, and now I can barely understand explanations. I think I'll ask him most questions via email.

i totally know what you mean... all my technical/math/science professors all had accents and were usually very monotonous. but i guess with math and other figure related subjects the universal language is numbers *shrug*
although... i've also had a number of american born teachers who were equally boring and indecipherable.

lol. thats funny. but i feel kinda of bad for teachers w/ accents. i had a sub and everyone would just make fun of him. i think he was middle eastern but i just felt so bad. probably because my parents have accents and it felt wrong to make fun of someone for they have no control over it. i'm heard of those speech classes but i mean when they talk in their native tongue its not gonna matter if they had those classes or not.

when i was a freshman, my njrotc instructor was from the filipines. though he had been in the states for 30+ years and had been serving in the navy for 30 years, he could scarcely speak english. it took all of us a few months to be able to understand him.

then when we finally did we found out he had a great, but rather filthy, sense of humor haha. love that dude.

wow this is kinda hard for me to believe. i'm not from the philippines but my mom is. and she already knew how to speak english when she came here. cuz when they speak tagalog they somethings use english words. and the filthy part, i remember my mom said filipino boys are always horny. lol. and that part is kinda true.

Yeah my kenyan professesor taught for 20 something years here in the U.S but still has a funny strong accent....besides filipino boys being horny I think most guys are horny!

ack! I know what you mean! I'm taking an Earth and Ocean Sciences class and the prof is seriously fresh of the boat from China. Shes impossible to understand, people dont even bother coming to class. I feel bad saying it (because im not biligual), but being fluent in english should kinda be an important requirment for teaching in english, you know?

Actually, that doesn't make it any easier for me. I like to understand how things work the way they do and why I should use a certain equation.
