question: HOW TO PROPERLY BLEND FOUNDATION???

i apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum....

So the way I blend my foundation is all over my face, inc. eyelids (because I have lots of red/sensitive skin on brow bone, cheeks, nose, chin, forehead... I need lots of coverage). I seem to put a lot of extra foundation than needed but I don't know any other way to lightly blend the foundation to get rid of the redness.

So to get to the question... does anyone know a good way to blend the foundation? Starting from outside to the inside of your face? I use my fingers, should I use a sponge?

ty for your help, sry if this is confuzzzing.

I have a lot of redness on my cheeks, and use liquid foundation. I used to use 190 and it streaks/makes foundation look crappy and cakey. But I use a 187se, and LOVE it. I put a bit of the liquid foundation from the bottle on the back of my hand, dip the 187 in it and apply on face, working usually from the middle of my face to the outside. (ie from under eyes/cheek down).

I personally don't like using my fingers, I'd use a sponge if you don't have a 187. Give it a shot and let us know if it works or not!

I have problems with redness also- to counteract that, you need to place a green colored concealer. Lightly! Then put your foundation over it.

I use my fingers also- I just have a hard time blending it with a brush. Dab spots of foundation on your cheeks, forehead, chin and nose, then blend all over and down your neck some. Then, go lightly over with a powder of some sort to set the foundation. If you want a really smooth look- spritz some Fix+ over the powder then add your blush and voila! beautiful skin

If you want to see how I do my foundation, check my profile for a tutorial called " How to achieve smooth skin using MUFE" (or something like that)

yeah...I agree with Marlena...go get some green base or concealer...I use the one from NYC and another from Maybeline (I think) they came in lipstick form and they are very cheap...you dont need to put more and more foundation to cover that redness...

For the blending, I use the Lancome Foundation brush, it´s pretty good, I also like the 187, always do my forehead first and then cheeks, nose and chin... and you know just blend...blend...blend...

A sponge, even wet, soaks up quite abit of product.
I used to se a brush, but I get better results with my scrubbed fingertips. Francois NARS was huge on melting the foundation into theface with the heat of one's fingertips. I never get streaks and no one knows I am wearing foundation. Foundation is so important to have the exact shade and exact formula. You don't need the formula to match the same product line of everything else you use. Or what your friends use. Some formulas just are not right for everyone.....some times a woman uses too many moisture products before her foundation and it looks clumpy or streaky, and will later oxidize (thats what oil does in excess, turn orange-and cake up later in the day).
Work from the center of the face outwards.

For redness, have you guys tried Clinique's Redness Solutions? I've always had redness around my nose and cheeks... not enough to really be a problem as I could cover it with foundation, but if I didn't wear foundation, I was red! I just got the Daily Relief cream last week, which is a moisturizer and it's working very well

I have oily skin and I don't notice it making my any oilier either... I just apply it to the areas where I need it under my normal daytime moisturizer and night cream.

They also make a cleanser, Urgent Relief cream (more for when you're having a reaction) and an oil-free green tinted make up primer. And Macy's is in GWP right now, so it might be a nice time to try them out

I have redness around my cheeks. I use Mineralize Satinfinish and use a foundation brush. I put a little on the back of my hand and start from the inside to outside and just keep blending it in circles until the coverage is even. I then use the buffer brush on my nose and forehead to blend it even more. MS is perfect me because I don't have any red cheeks afterwards and gives me a flawless finish that doesn't look like you are wearing foundation.

thanks for the tip!

I just wasn't impressed with cliniques 3 step daily cleansing routine (toner burns, moisturizer is unimpressive) but love the take the day off eye/lip makeup remover.

I will definitely stop by there this week! Thanks girl!

Yup, get a green corrector. I have MUFE camiflauge pallette. You can also use smashbox photofinish (green).

Then apply foundation. Never, apply with your fingers. Your fingers have oils & you're putting the oils from your fingers onto your face.

2 methods of applying foundation:

1- I personlly use a foundation brush. apply on forehead, nose, chin, cheeks & blend..blend..blend. You want to blend below your jaw line & you want your foundation to match yous skin tone exactly.

You can always add color to the face by using blush, bronzer, msf, etc

2 - a sponge - wet the sponge & squeeze out excess water. When you wet the sponge, your foundation blends better. With using a sponge, you want to pat not use strokes because you don't want to wipe off the foundation & you don't want to ruin your skin.
after using a sponge, please throw it away, do not reuse @ all.

after applying foundation you want to set with a powder using a big powder blush.

Just practice on yourself & anyone you can get your hands on. You'll be fine

Hope this helps & good luck

I'm picky about Clinique... DDML isn't anything great so I agree with you (I can't believe how many people are in LOVE with it!) there but I do use Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion and love their Starry Plum Cream liner. So I know where you're coming from... alot of their stuff I just don't like, but I would recommend the Redness Solutions Daily Relief Cream

My foundation looks the best when applied with the 187. I also avoid MAC foundations because they don't work for me. Prescriptives is much better.

I agree with green corrector to combat redness. You don't want to layer on too much foundation if it can be fixed with a color corrector.

I use either my fingers or sponge. I own a foundation brush but I find it soaks up a lot of foundation and seems wasteful to me. I use my fingers for quick application and for sheer foundations. When I want a nice flawless finish I will use a thicker consistency foundation and apply with wedge sponges in a dabbing motion. I use a dry sponge but I make sure my skin is moisturized and I don't swipe or rub with the sponge too much. I finish off with a very light dusting of loose power with a large brush. I find the result is seamless but natural looking. HTH

Victor Cembellin, one of MAC's artists did a seminar in Chicago a couple weeks prior and he used the 182 brush to buff on foundation. It's totally flawless coverage and easy with less mess. He also used a step by step process using that brush too. After cleansing, he used the 182 to buff on strobe cream, then primer, then foundation. You can go a week before you have to clean the brush too because there shouldn't be anything left on it after applying all three products as long as you use a dime size of each, with the exception of foundation.

You can use MUFE's tinted primer in green it has less pigmentation and usually counters redness without the heavy texture of a cream concealer or you can use one of Armani's master concealers in green or yellow, it's very fluid and highly pigmented.

As for properly blending foundation, I would say that formula is everything like it was mentioned by Kuuipo, just because a formula works for some people, it doesn't mean it's adequate for you.

Using a brush or sponge is better than using fingers. Also, don't apply a lot of foundation at once. Instead, apply light layers until you achieve the level of coverage required.

A synthetic foundation brush does not soak up foundation and provides an even, flawless finish. I like MAC's #187 and/or #191. Use a smaller brush like a concealer brush to apply foundation around and under the eyes.

If applying liquid foundation, use a sponge like beautyblender - it does not soak up a lot of foundation and can be re-used many times. It takes a bit of practice, but you can achieve an amazing finish with this sponge.

For creme or powder foundation, using a brush is a better option. You can control the level of coverage very well by using a brush. HTH!

I have a lot of redness too and I use a brush AND a sponge, because I don't always wear the same foundation every day. I agree with those saying not to use your fingers because of oil present there. Also it is definitely a good idea to start out light and just layer the foundation where you need it most.
If you have not been matched to a foundation shade then I would recommend going to your favourite cosmetics counter and asking a MA to match you. I did this at MAC and I found that I am a NC15 even though my undertone is very blue/pink. He told me that since I have so much pink already in my skin that wearing any NW shades were not going to make my face match the rest of me and instead to use NC shades because I don't have any gold or yellow tones in my skin. This is akin to the L'Oreal True Blend (or whatever it's called) line with the "neutral", "warm" and "cool" options.
