Questions for MAC MAs & Consumers Regarding Which Products Sell Well and Which Don't

These questions are for the MAC MAs out there. I'd love to hear your thoughts on your personal experiences with:

  • What specific product (type and colour name) do you sell the most of?
  • What specific product (type and colour name) do you sell the least of?
  • What product do you feel should be discontinued (type of product or a specific colour)?
  • What product do you feel isn't getting the love it deserves (type of product or a specific colour)?

For the rest of us consumers, what do you think deserves to be discontinued (product type or specific product)? What doesn't get the love it deserves? Consider adding your skintone and hair/eye colour so that others can learn from your recommendations.

Here's what I have noticed at my counter:
-What specific product (type and colour name) do you sell the most of?
We sell alot of Studio Fix foundations, bronzers and alot of Brulés...

-What specific product (type and colour name) do you sell the least of?
As mentionned above, we don't sell alot of Lacquers, which is a very sad thing because they are amazing. I guess we also tend to forget about them, considering the number of lip collections that are permanent now. But customers do miss out on them. We also don't sell alot of CCB's, alot of clients at my counter just don't know what they are or how to use them.

-What product do you feel should be discontinued (type of product or a specific colour)?
Lustre eyeshadows should be discontinued hands down. They're very chalky, and their pigmentation isn't great (aside maybe from Aquadisiac).

-What product do you feel isn't getting the love it deserves (type of product or a specific colour)?
My list is long.
All the color shadesticks. Everyone buys Beig-ing because it can go with everything.
Also, the paints in the tube don't seem to get customers attention,
as well as Studio Stick foundation, which IMO gives the most beautiful satiny finish to the skin.
I also feel Plumage eyeshadow doesn't get alot of love, and it's such a unique color. Carbon overshadow's it.
As mentionned above, the pigments should get more attention. I guess people don't have the time in the morning to play with loose powders, and all the cleaning up that comes with their application.
Viva Glams, aside from the V and the VI, should definetly be looked at. The money is going to a great cause and the colors are universally flattering.
Also, alot of clients are scared of deep vampy lip colors, such as Film Noir or Diva, but they are so gutsy and with the perfect makeup, they make such an impact. It gives off a 1920's vibe, and is different from all the smokey eyes everyone else is wearing.

From a consumer standpoint I have to agree with discontinuing the lustres...or atleast tweaking the formula so more come out like Tempting and Magnetic Fields. And it would be great if they kept around the Shadesticks and Paints. The Paintpots seem far more prone to drying out.

Discontinue:
the lacquers. so so sticky!
lustre e/s. or at least reformulate the colors.
same for the existing mattes, they should be made in the matte^2 finish, I find it much smoother.

Repromote:
the CCB's, I don't even really get what these are for! New LE colors would probably garner them more attn in the regular line.
Mattenes, although in more wearable colors, please.
I would like Paints if they repackaged them into plastic tubes. The metal ones are neat and artsy, but a pain in the rear and they leak all over (even with the crimp unfolded)

Personally, I think these don't get enough love:
Faux and Sweetie lipsticks
Plushglasses, I wish MAC would knock the price down on these to the regular lipglasses.
Shale and Sable e/s

  • What product do you feel should be discontinued (type of product or a specific colour)?

    Pro-longwears
Prep & Prime Eye & Lips
Lustre eyeshadows (they are awful, with a very few exceptions)
    Full coverage foundation
    Irridescent Powders Loose (too chunky)
CCB - maybe reforumulated but as is they don't really work great for anything that can't be replaced with a better product
  • What product do you feel isn't getting the love it deserves (type of product or a specific colour)?

Shadesticks (but they are on the way out anyway)
Paints
182 brush

I guess it's always a regional issue, because the Prolongwears sell alot in my area, especially when an older clientele is concerned.

Well the top sellers in our store are:

Golden Bronzer
Pro Long Lash Black Mascara
Smolder Eye Pencil
Foundation Brushes
Studio Fix Fluid Foundations

I find we rarely sell Crimsonair Shade stick. Although I really like it. We also rarely sell the lip laquers. I think they are going to discontinue them! xx

Speaking as a consumer and former MAC MA:

What product do you feel should be discontinued (type of product or a specific colour)?

Lips:
- Prolongwears and Lustre Longwears. They are uncomfortably dry. I realize a product of that nature (long wearing) will have to be dry, but you have to remedy that by adding the glossy topcoat throughout the day. You do that anyway with regular gloss. What is the benefit of the long wear?
- Cremestick liners could use a tweak. I like the forumula and staying power, but you can't get the sharp precision you can with pencils that will sharpen. We all love a well-blended lip,but sometimes you need a really fine point for darker colours.

Eyes:
- Prep + Prime Eye crease like crazy and dull colours
- Liquidlast Liners need a tweak to a slightly thinner formula and less staying-power (Yes, you read that right....lol. It shouldn't take a nuclear blast to remove a makeup product. There is a happy medium between runny/smudgy and ridiculously permanent.)
- I don't really like any of the mascaras with the exception of Plushlash and Fibre Riche. They are just OK

Face:
- Studio Mist foundation (bad colour stabilization, unpleasant smell, and inconvenient)
- Studio Fix Fluid needs better colour stabilization (too orange)
- The new Mineralize Foundation Loose lid is akward and the naming protocol is unnecessarily cumbersome.
- Beauty Powder Loose (Hey....stop throwing things at me!) I know, we were all dying for these and I do love them. However, I wanted them to more closely mimic pressed BPs. I wanted the loose formula to give that same luminescence that the pressed do. The loose formula is too glittery.
- Iridescent Pressed Powder - They only have one colour left and the loose are better anyway.
- The Select Sheer powders could use a tweak. There are better ingredients available now, as opposed to when they were launched. Ingredients that could help those powders have a lighter feel and a soft focus finish.

What product do you feel isn't getting the love it deserves (type of product or a specific colour)?

Lips:
- Prep + Prime Lip - It's not drying and it does hang on to those lips products.
- Laquers - They have great pigmenation and shine. I just wish they had a better smell. They smell like Tums. Yak.
- TLCs - They give great colour, feel amazing and smell delish.

Eyes:
- Paints - Unbeatable staying power. Great base and amazing on their own. The formula allows for really pigmented or metallic finishes. A really unique product. Well, it was. Being DCd.
- Shadesticks - Again, the formula allows for great colours. They are great as bases or on their own. Again, sadly being DCd.
-#20 & #38 half lashes - They look very natural and not too dramatic. Happy medium.

Face:
- Hypereal Foundation - Nice, natural glow. Feels great on the skin
- MSF Naturals used as bronzers. They have a more finely milled pigment than the bronzers, so they give a more natural look.
- Iridescent Loose powders are great on the face and eyes. I like to mix them with lotions as well to make a nice natural glow.
- Select Cover-Up is the best concealer. Period.
- Blushcremes - They give a natural glow. Once you make friends with them and learn how to use them, you will love them.
- Using the #109 Small Contour brush for application of liquid foundations.
