Did you apply for a specific counter?
If you didn't, I'm thinking they probably had you come in because they assumed you would be open for other available positions.
However there really is no excuse for them to mislead you in that manner. They shouldn't have told you the interview was for cosmetics, if it really was not.
That's a bummer tho, I can understand how it can be annoying. Try to apply again, but this time inquire with the manager for the counter you want to work at.

It happens a lot with them. I think its because if you are REALLY looking for a job, they think you'll take one in another department.
Also, people from other department have priority in transfers to cosmetics. There are ppl that know NOTHING about makeup, but macy's will transfer them to a cosmetics counter.
The first time I applied at Macy's for makeup they didnt hire me for cosmetics because I had ZERO experience. The second time (around Christmas) I still had ZERO experience and got hired by a diff manager for Oncall.
Just ask them, and if they you its full try a different location.
