That's so much. Here the price of gas is going down. I filled up yesterday and it was 2.83 a gallon. I spent 15 bucks so it's not too bad. But, on the way home one place lowered their price to 2.73.

Sales tax here in NY is 8.25%. I think that is too much. Last year it went up from 7.25 to 8.25%.

that still seems so outrageous here, I got gas the other day for 2.19 and sales tax is 6 or 7%, I think 6.

It's known as Rip-Off Britain. Everything here is over-priced and no, the pay isn't that much higher that it offsets the rip-off prices.

Our government are greedy gits and line their own pockets at our expense regularly.

In the case of fuel, the government charge duty on top of the price the fuel companies charge AND THEN THEY ADD SALES TAX! So we pay tax on top of the tax!

They get away with it because we're a much smaller country than the US, so there are less of us to protest, and, of course, the British way is to just accept these things and not rock the boat, so very few ever do protest. It sickens me. I want to leave this country so badly.

In NYC we pay taxes for almost everything except uncooked food & medications (example: Tylenol).

I think it was last year that it went up from 8.25% to 8.375% (example of taxed items/services: cosmetics, all restaurants including fast food, appliances, cleaning products).

After labor they did us a small favor and lowered the tax on clothing & shoe items that cost less than $110.00 to 4.375%.

Sales tax is about the only low thing in Hawaii at 4.167%

Gas was at $3.68 for unleaded last week, down to $3.24 this week. What a deal!! Doesn't help that I have to drive an hour to work

That's why I didn't do much shopping when I went to London. I didn't understand why my friends bought so much stuff that was available over here, like Gap clothing and such.

Don't complain about gas prices in the States I payed $6 for a gallon today! Actually €1.30/liter!
When Katrina hit the States the prices went up to €1.43/liter!!!!! It's so sick and just because our government puts humonguous (sp?) taxes on it!

I visit the USA regularly and with combination of the difference in sales tax, the favourable pound to dollar exchange rate and the fact that the PPID card gets more discount in the USA than in the UK you can imagine where I get a lot of my M·A·C from. I did a mini haul (actually about $150 worth) in Atlanta at Perimeter mall a couple of weeks back which ended up costing me about half what it would have done in the UK.

House prices here are just ludicrous. I have a three bedroom apartment which I bought 7½ years ago. It's now worth about $380,000 and even the cheapest studio apartments near me go for a little over $200,000.

You Brits & Euros do have high taxes & sky-high gasoline prices...(veers OT)
BUT you have great public transport ("great" relative to the U.S.) and socialized medicine. I know the NHS blows, but at least if you get hit by a car and don't have private insurance you won't go bankrupt.
Sorry for the mini-rant!

No, but it is possible to die waiting for any sort of routine treatment. Waiting lists for almost any sort of treatment here are incredible. The whole system is under-resourced and failing. And it's not free, we pay National Insurance, (another tax), for it.

Ouch, well the insurance companies rule in America and its rotten that people have to pay that much for insurance (health -home-car) . I am part native american and I use the Indian Health service thankfully. Fuel is 2.17 a gallon in Oklahoma this week. but my husband and I make a decent *not too decent- cop and teacher* income and its still pay check to paycheck and thats without car payments and a very low mortgage.

In Texas, gas is about 2.40 per gallon. Which I'm getting uber excited about b/c I drive an SUV & my dad drives a Dodge RAM(w/ Hemi engine).

I don't know about all the other junk..like health issurance or house payment. My health is covered b/c my mom is retired military. SWEET
greengrin.gif
We pay VERY little. Which is extra good for my family b/c I was in a house fire(lots of surgeries after that!) & we get free Medications.

I pay my parents $100/month for car issurance(18 yr old female) but it probably will go up cuz I had an accident awhile ago.

I just seen this thread and was like I didn't start this lol

I just got gas yesterday, it was $2.62. I spent $20 and it pretty much filled up my tank. Like 3 more dollars and it would have been full, but I didn't have anymore money. It should last all week.
