San Jose area - Nordstrom’s vs. Macy’s

Is anyone here familiar with the cosmetic counters in Macy’s and/or Nordstrom’s at Oakridge or Valley Fair? If, so what is the work environment like there? I've heard some Macy's people complain about having to push credit card apps.

I’m not sure which counter I would prefer to work at, I know most people on this site prefer MAC, but what would you consider to be the favorite 3 counters to work in these stores?

I have been reviewing past posts and it looks like pay ranges from $12-$25 per hour, is this correct? Is the pay different for freelance make up artists vs. counter sales people?

I have never worked in cosmetics, but did attend cosmetology school (many years ago) and make up was always my favorite part. My career path has not been retail, but is has been sales related, in recruiting (which in itself is sales oriented, selling the position to prospective employees) and in real estate (which is heavy sales). Do you think my background would be a good fit?

I have management and training experience, so I’m not sure if I would be a better fit for a Counter Manager role, or if they would want me to start as a Sales Associate first?

I am now home schooling my daughter and need to find a position where I can start after 2:00pm. I thought this would be a good time to pursue something fun and cosmetics came to mind. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Ok I've met girls from both counters at Update and everyone is equally happy. However at Macy's a MAC girl/guy doesn't push the Macy's card, at Nordstroms you have to but the goal is only like 2 a month. At Macy's you go by MAC rules, and at Nordstroms you are a Nordies employee.

Considering that you have so much sales experience, as well as a license, you might be ok. I guess it'll depend on the manager. Now if you want to go for a management position with MAC it's a lil harder to do from off the street. From everything I hear you're more likely to be hired from within then from the outside for a position like that. Not to say it doesn't happen though.

Your best bet is to talk to both counter managers and see if there are any positions. If not then ask them how you can interview for a freelance position, that'll get you in the door. So that way when a position does open up you get first dibs to interview for it.

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me as you need.
