How does shadow work as a base? or what is its purpose as a base?!

How does shadow work as a base? I think you mean, why do shadows need a base lol. Well people use paints as a base and then put on eyeshadow for it to not crease.

you can use an eyeshadow base like a paint or a shadestick or urban decay's primer potion is really great to keep the eyeshadow from creasing and stays on longer and makes the color "pop". you can use a very light neutral shade of eyeshadow as a base as well.

Or if you mean why do people use like 3 and 4 eyeshadows to get one look, one color is your base color or your all over color then you use others for the inner lid outter v etc...
