should I take my portfolio along

I'am getting ready to take my resume to a mac counter, but i was wondering is it neccessary to bring my portfolio along as well.

You can't go wrong bringing a portfolio especially if you don't have a lot on your resume and because MAC is so competitive.

Whenever on the hunt for work, it's ALWAYS a good idea to bring your portfolio! In the makeup world, displaying your practical application of knowledge is just as important (sometimes more so) than your education/experience in words. HTH!
