Hi!

I can't find a store that sells the knife and magnets needed for depotting. Does anyone know of a store in NYC (preferably in Manhattan) that sells them?

Thanks

Well, because I'm on a CRAZY budget right now, I used a flat thin nail file (instead of a knife)(you just need it to pry the pan out of the pot..) and some needle nose pliers, most people have a pair laying around their house (i used pliers to hold onto the lid of the pot, instead of a spatula to sit it on) ANY craft store will work though, hobby lobby, michaels, joanns, umm...those are the ones we have in the midwest. Target and Walmart (or equivelant) will also carry the supplies.

Or you can use tweezers with a slant tip instead of a knife. Craft stores have magnets, too.

I used one of those tiny flathead screwdrivers, and then for the magnets just use those advertisement magnets that businesses give you & cut little squares out of them. When depotting MAC shadows, there was enough glue still on the back of the pan I just stuck the magnet on that & didn't need to add extra glue to the back of the magnet.

After prying off the thin plastic thing holding the metal pan, then heating over a candle on top of an old fork, I set it on a towel and used edges of the towel to protect my fingers as I forced the sides to bend down softly, then when there was space enough I used the little screwdriver to pry it out. It's a screwdriver the size that you'd use for electronics or something, not quite as small as glasses screwdrivers you get in those kits, altho they might work ok too.

You can buy an exacto knife in Staples or Office Max. As for magnetic strips/tape probably like Home Depot or Lowes.

I finally depotted!

I love Target; will you believe Manhattan does not have one?!

The advertisement magnets are a great idea, thanks!

I finally depotted a few (see pic), I used an old tweezer to hold it over the candle. I taped the bottom of the pans to keep them in place, but when I get home I’m looking on my fridge for magnets that I can use.

...or you could try Staples for magnetic tape. That's where I got mine. A small roll was under $3. I cut it and added a dab of glue to the magnet then attached it to the pan and popped it into the palette. Although the magnet has adhesive on the back of the tape, I found that it wasn't strong enough and added a dab of "Gorilla glue" to it for extra strength. Worked like a charm!

I know there is (or was?) a KMart near Penn Station. Maybe you'd have some luck there. Some of the larger Duane Reade's have a good selction of stuff, maybe try there too?

are there ways to depot your shadows w/o baking them in the oven or heating them over a candle flame? i'm always afraid i'll ruin my shadow by "heating" them too long.

I don't know, you should start a new thread for this question. Some of mine chipped when I depotted over a candle, I never tried baking, sounds scary.
