text messaging is annoying.

i love texting... but if something is important or urgent, i definitely pick up the phone.

for me - the benefits of texting are:

i can send a quick note to someone whilst ensuring i don't interrupt their work, sleep or whatever they are doing. i have people in my life that do shift work, work odd hours and those that are chronic "ignore ringing phone, but never check voicemail" people.

if i finalise plans to meet up with someone over text - i can always refer back to the message for the time and place. this is especially useful if i'm going to a venue i have never been to before.

i can quickly send a message to someone without having to talk on the phone - useful in public places, quiet places and on public transport. with ambient noise being what it is, phone conversations tend to increase in volume so everyone can hear them. in a quiet place, i don't want to disturb the serenity too much.

Kimmy: your "beep boop beep beep bip beep boop boop" comment reminded me of a garfield comic strip where garfield started randomly hitting the phone buttons to make a song... and ended up calling japan.

Everything in moderation.

I like to text when I'm on the commuter train to work. Unlike public transit it's generally very quiet and many people on the train nap or read books and I would rather text someone than yap away (brief calls are exempted). I've sat beside someone who talked the whole ride through and since they are the only person talking you can't help but hear every detail of the conversation. It can get really annoying.

However it's a HUGE pet peeve of mine when a guy who's interested in you asks you out on text message. I find that a real turn off, the fact that he can't even bother to pick up the phone. I know it can be a preference sometimes so I will just tell the guy to call me instead. But if they don't get the hint and continue to use text message then it's a big no no for me.

ugh I hate that too. One friend in particular always takes things the wrong way and then she will call me to bitch about how rude I am when really she just did not understand my tone. So annoying. I text for quick things but I try not to have any major conversations through text, it gets too overdramatic!

I'm addicted to texting like how I'm addicted to internet lol I type as fast as I text lol And I can both of them without looking haha : )

I have a Blackberry and you wouldn't be able to tell if I'm texting or sending an e-mail so I disagree with texting making someone look immature or what not. I go on the train with people making six figures a year texting away on their Blackberries lol so I guess to each his own.

-edit I understand the whole "tone of voice" thing and I think it DOES cause a lot of problems but that only occurs in younger teens I think because most people who are older usually text like "What's up?" "Nothing, how about you?". We don't really do it like "Wassup? I miss ya!!" even if they're two bestfriends or a couple.

Like others have mentioned, texting is great for quick messages or a "what's up" when you're bored.

But having long convos or serious convos via text is juvenile IMO.

It's also great when you're at work and you don't want to make a personal call on the work phone and your cell has no signal lol

Texting can be annoying, but it's pretty useful too. There are a lot of situations where either you or the other person can't be on the phone, and you need to send them a short message. Perfect. Also I love texting because I can stay in touch with my bf during the day, and when I have to go months without seeing him (like right now) it helps to feel like he is still a part of my day to day life.

I think texting is really convenient; if I'm somewhere and I can't make a phone call but just have something quick to say ("Can you get some bread while you're at the store?") texting makes it easier.

I HATE people who text like a whole story that needs to be talked about in a phone call; if your ONE message has to be delivered to my phone in 3 separate texts, you need to just call me and leave a damn voicemail.

I also hate those dumb forward texts (Send this to 10 people or you die!); too bad you can't block those the same way you can block emails you don't want.

Texts are ok for trivial things like "Can you pick up some milk", but not for serious issues. A guy I had been in a relationship with for 14 months deemed it appropriate to break up with me via a text message. Fail.

I have to admit, if I were a dinosaur, I'd be a Textasaurus Rex. Last bill I looked at I sent 5,413 texts. and that was before I got my iPhone, I'm sure its far worse than that now. I dont do serious convo, just heys and you sucks, and weird random shit. I also text short stuff if Im at work and dont like to talk on cell cause bosses walk by.

I don't have text messaging...I know. I know.... but I think it's great if you can't talk for some reason (texting in class ayone?)...BUT no one seems to use it for that...I've been out to dinner and in the middle of a convo when someone starts texting, and of course the other person that sends the message is at work or in the middle of something important as well.....umm shouldn't you be listening to what I'm saying and shouldn't your bf be working? lol. and O-M-G what is more rude than talking to someone and they stop to look at their phone and start laughing...holy sh*t, it's the same thing as whispering!

I've definitely been averaging anywhere from 5-6,000 txts/month.
I hate talking on the phone... but I can (and often do!) txt all day long.
It's nice because I can do multiple things and still have convos with other people who are also doing multiple things.

So funny I agree...Like If you don't forward this message to 10 people in the next 10 minutes you will miss God's blessings...Ok...This text message did not come from God...Please stop cutting into my not unlimited monthly text quota...

I get those all the time! It's always my older friends that send them to me too, like they are scared to not pass along the message!

It can be useful, mostly for txting addresses, times, etc... but otherwise I *hate* them.

So... instead of responding to them with more texts, I call back with a response. That way, I avoid the whole texting mess and hassle, and my friends eventually get it through their heads that I'm not going to engage in the texting madness and stop trying to use it for conversations with me. Win.

I absolutely hate texting!
Mainly because a immature boy sent me alot of inappropriate text messages and I got my nice phone taken away for months and had to use a pink razor that would die in a couple of hours!
Plus I'll talk to my friend on her cell phone and say hang on and she'll text someone every other minute and sometimes she forgets I'm still on the phone and close it after she's done and hang up on me.
I for one am glad I don't have texting anymore it's so boring and it makes your fingers cramped.
