The Aqua Teen Hunger Force Scandal

So what does everyone think?

I've read so many accounts (being in Boston) that I'm not sure. The things didn't look like a bomb to me, but just a regular electric circuit with LEDs. However, I'm not that familiar with bombs, so I'm not sure if there are bombs that could be like that.

I personally find the whole thing bizarre. On one hand, people have become super paranoid, but on the other hand, there are reasons for this. Legitimate ones.

If anything, I'm deeply saddened that this has become the norm.

As for public mischief charges? From what I've heard of the case, I don't think it's fair. Especially if the LED boards were clearly displayed. I'd have got it, and I'm over 40.

It's the best public marketing campaign ever. Thanks to the media coverage - free advertisement.

I almost want to buy one of the signs on eBay but don't have the 3K for it.

personally i love aqua teen hunger force.. n it was only those little light boards that were really popular in the 80s. when i first heard about it i thought it was so silly n if i saw it in real life i'd love it!! it's just the climate these days is so fearful that people cant even take a joke and just overreact when people try something diff.

ITA. My father asked me about this cartoon; he never heard about it otherwise.

I wonder if they expected this kind of reaction. Had I seen one of those signs on the street, I wouldn't have known it was for Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I wouldn't know what it was.

The thing is, if you are one of the many, many people who is NOT familiar with that cartoon and you see a thing with flashing lights, something flicking you off and WIRES protuding from it, wouldn't you be a little concerned that it might be some kind of possible incendiary device? I don't think its far-fetched that people panicked.

I also don't think that it is is possible that it never crossed the minds of the many people involved that the could be misconstrued in this day and age and that makes them culpable in my mind.

Plus those two guys were such farking idiots at their press conference, they deserve to go to jail just for bringing down the collective IQ.

Lord have mercy-it's just one more way government is trying to control our lives.
Seriously-I am not familiar with Aqua Teen Hunger Force-but that is OK. If I walked down the streets of ATL and saw that thing-I would wonder-Heh. What the hell is that? Then never give it a second thought.
However, unfortuantely we are in an place today in the world that is very very paranoid because well look at our recent history.
It's just ridiculous. The whole thing is.
It's such a waste of taxpayer dollars

I feel so awful for those living in Massachusetts who aren't idiots. It would seem like they're in the minority. How embarrassing.

Well, since I watch ATHF and recognized the character as a Mooninite, I thought it was hilarious. The bomb threats were a bit outrageous, and to me clearly a stunt and just looked like a Lite Brite (remember those 80s toys?), but I can't speak for the people of Boston who could have been legitimately concerned about them.

I wish I could buy one off of eBay, lol.

The local government and authorities were informed about the lights going up, and the Mooninites were on display for two weeks before it was decided that they were a 'bomb threat'.

The authorities completely fucked up and are trying to save face after needlessly shutting down the city and whipping up public panic by declaring themselves 'tough on terrorism' and putting bullshit charges onto the two guys who were in charge of creating and distributing th Lite Brite boards. The lights were up in far larger cities who have a legitimate reason to be wary of small LED devices (NYC, anyone?), but authorities there managed to let the right hand know what the left hand was doing.

The press conference the two guys gave afterwards was hilarious, though. "I'd like to talk about the hairstyles of the 1970's..."

From what I experienced that day, the city didn't really shut down. I was out that morning (in the downtown area, near the gov't section) and in the early afternoon to evening.

Part of me is embarassed, part of me is amused, because one of the recent issues of Boston (a magazine; I think that's what it's called) declared this area to be the most intelligent or something (because of housing MIT, Harvard, and a lot other higher education places.)
