Tipping when paying with a credit card?

I have a question about tipping. If I'm paying for my haircut by credit card is it better tio just add the tip to the credit card bill , or is it better to give the tip in cash to the stylist even tho I'm paying the bill with credit card?

Also how much am I supposed to give the person who washes my hair if she is different than the actual stylist? Thanks.

Hi,
I usually always make sure I have enough cash for the tip even if I pay by CC, no particular reason, I just feel better doing it that way.

The shampoo and prep people I usually tip $2.00 unless I am doing color and they are doing extra work then it's usually a few dollars extra depending.

I usually try to remember to take cash with me for tips, but for some reason I am anti-cash and never carry any around with me opting for debit card use instead. That said, every salon I've ever gone to (from chains to smaller operations) will let you add the tip to your total card payment and then give you the cash to give to the stylist, so I usually feel pretty okay just putting it on the card.

I'm not sure how this works in terms of taxes, however. When I can, I leave tips in restaurants in cash because if it's on the card, a record of all the credit tips will be on the server's income report, meaning they will have to pay taxes on it. While you're supposed to pay taxes on all tips you get, if the server gets the tip in cash, they don't really have a record that says what they made, so they may *forget* to pay on the cash tips. That's me, helping to fight the man whenever possible. But yeah, I don't know if putting it on you card in the "you charge it but they give you cash for the stylist" scenario.

I don't know if that helped, but I tried!

my boyfriend used to be a waiter, and he always said he preferred cash tips only because you get the $$ right away.. with CC tips, they have to wait til the end of the night to cash out and you have to be careful that you get the right amount- I'm figuring it's that way for all "service" jobs... I always tip with cash and for the girl who washes my hair (if it's a different person) I usually only give $2 or $3.. it's not like she's doing anything huge!
