Can you give some tips on how to improve make up skills/techniques? I'm thinking of applying at the MAC freestanding stores and counters in my area in the next few months and I'd really like some help. I've read that you have to do a make up demo as part of the hiring process and I really wanna nail it! Thanks in advance....

PS. If I get brave enough to post pictures of make up I've done, I'd really love to have it critiqued by professionals.

The best thing to do is practice, practice, practice.. I know it sounds corny, and alot of people say it over and over, but as a makeup artist, it really is the best thing to do.. so get all your friends together..and your camera,, and Go for it!
You can also read alot of books on it, get inspiration from magazines.. I dont know if you read Allure magazine,, but its an awesome magazine for makeup.
Kevyn Aucoin books are awesome too.

Good Luck!

Practice, practice and practice some more...take looks from magazines (even thosen that aren't really your style) and recreate them on your friends (it's not the same doing makeup on yourself as it is on someone else...I personally find it easier and more enjoyable to do someone else's makeup that applying it on myself). IMHO, there's nothing better than an MA who can do any look that's requested...

Also just try fun colors...Don't be afraid of making mistakes either, that;s how we learn..You learn a lot once you start to work at MAC believe me..LOL...So once you get the foot in the door it's all good..Plus really show your personality:O)

Hi,
Don't be nervous ! Most of us understand that you don't have the training in using our products. Bring a pretty friend as a model and use color! No boring browns! Not too much drama either. Pick a look that will cater to the customer in your area and make sure there are no hard edges. It is all in the blending. Do a day look and then ask if u can add to take it into a night time look with a little more drama. Be ready to explain why you chose those particular colors. Highlight and contour in a natural way. Most of the time the manager and or trainer will only look at the finished product, they will most likely not stand over you the whole time.
During the interview, stay super positive and come across like a "go getter ", be professional, dress in black with fab make-up and BRING A RESUME.
Good luck!!

Thanks for the tips...
Ally I am going to apply to freelance at the Plaza Bonita store and Chula Vista and Grossmont Macy's counters, probably at the end of this month and into the beginning of next. I know my personality won't be an issue (damn that sounds conceited huh lol) I don't have any problems making conversation with people, even complete strangers, or being helpful in choosing products and colors. I've talked people into and out of so many things, perfect strangers! But I do it so courteously I guess. I'm just worried that I don't have enough retail experience, I've only had 3 retail jobs over 2 and a half years, SeaWorld merch department and Target. I've had good comment cards from guests at both jobs as well as good employee evaluations from my bosses...would that be enough?
And my next question is, how do I go about applying? Go in, ask for the manager, introduce myself and tell them I'm interested in applying? Also, an example of a good face look to wear when i go in. I'm known for my bright colors but I don't wanna wear anything too overpowering when i go in and make it look like I'm trying too hard.

Oh and I have several kevyn aucoin (AKA God) books and Iman's The Beauty Of Color. I also look at Elle, Allure, Cosmo, FHM/Maxim (those women are just so hot! haha) for inspiration that I use when I do make up.

why don't u try a smokey look with an accent on color on the lid....i think that would be glam enough to stand apart when applying, but the smokey looks sexy and can show off them blendin skills...good luck girl!

Anywho i really hope you get the job ,wear all black too. On your resume tell em you know mac's products since you been using them on yourself as well as other poeple. Those two jobs are great retial jobs, i was only a cashier at albertsons but pushed extra sales that they had us do weekly, if you can include any letter you got with high marks abotu your customer serive if not then mention it. It shows you work well with people and your confidence that they see they shoudl be impressed.

DUDE where is CCO?! I can't go next weekend cuz I'ma be in New York, but I can go the weekend after and i'll have money by then!

also, can you help me with a resume? I've never done one

and yes I love myself in greens, and I've never done a dramatic lip cuz i'm afraid to lol I need a little help with that. I need to go lipstick shopping. I'm expecting 400 bucks in birthday cash to drop into my account in the next couple weeks so I'm gonna do a major spring clothes and make up shopping. We'll have to get together and hit that up, and you can help me find some suitable lipstick without me looking clownish. I suck at picking lip colors, I run straight for the glosses like a 14 year old lol
thanks for all your help ally! we need to get together soon and talk make up and have coffee or something.

. Its even better if you have a portfoilio with you so they can get an idea of what you can do, it doesnt have to cost you alot, to start off get good 8by10 photos of yourself and firends or cleints that you put makeup on and put it in a proffesional looking black book.

Have a safe trip girl, god bless!

oh yea i can def help you with your resume, do u have your portfoilio yet?
