Too Glittery?

I have been up against this sort of thing all my life. I have always prefered to wear bright colours on my eyes, in fact at one point one of my favourite eyeshadow was a shade of orange! I have been told so many times by different people that i needed to tone my eye colours down. (Mainly by people who rarely wear makeup by the way).

I am so much older now, i wouldnt dream of wearing the colours i used to get away with (mutton dressed as lamb springs to mind), but when i try and tone my eye colours down i feel washed out - and only the other day i went out somewhere with my husband, took ages on my makeup - sporting what one could class as 'the natural look', we got in the car and my he said 'you could have at least made an effort!' after kicking his bad leg, i could see where he was coming from. Natural is not for me!! I have dark hair, bright coloured eyes - i dont do 'browns' they look like sludge on me!

Your eyes are beautiful, they are made up perfectly. If other people dont like them thats their problem, in my opinion, they are rude to comment on them.

Yea, i remember you posting about this earlier. In my opinion, its really the flash thats making it seem so "frosty" or whatever. Which is hard to get around i know, cuz without the flash its too dark to see the makeup as it really is. Even with, it doesnt look too "glittery" or anything to me, actually...i really like the last look you did, so pretty.

So, theyre just giving you their opinions, you can take em or leave em. I think most of the girls on here are really nice & honest, so you should definitely post tons of fotds =)

I think shimmers are perfect for you and your coloring. Very Ice Princess, and I mean that in a good way. Your choices are great. I'm beginning to experiment with some mattes now, but I love shimmers, too. What works for me is to use the shimmer on the majority of the lid, then use a matte on the outermost corner and into the crease. Adds great definition. Since you like Brill (so do I), try doing this technique with Brill over the entire lid, then use Plumage over it on the corner and crease. For a more neutral, grab your beigey shimmer of choice and use something like Mystery for definition. Mostly, if you like it, then try to let the other's opinions roll off.

Relax! Your makeup is absolutely gorgeous and to-die-for!

Sometimes our camera plays tricks on us like playing up the colors or muting them completely.

Hon - keep it up and be proud of your makeup. I agree 100% that the camara makes frost and glitter look heavier than it is. That being said.. it stilll looks nice to me!
I'm suprised you got those kind of reactions on here.
You're young - live it up.

Totally agree with the camera making it look heavier that it is. Don't sweat it, it looks good and your application is great!

I think that it is odd for people to use "natural" & "MAC" in the same sentence. Its funny when MAC does put out something that is more natural that people complain "nothing jumped out" or "it all looked so blah" or "this collection is boring". I try to stay natural with my application, but if I could pull it off, I would do bright, frosty, sparkley e/s. I'm not too good at blending or wearing more than 2 shades at a time. I think your picks are great, but you did say "criticism welcome". Not being mean, just saying...

yeah but i wanted criticism from you gals, not from a bunch of b*tches at some non-makeup forum where i just posted them for fun, which is what happened

but everyone has MUCH better "critisism" here, so i'm glad!! not mean at all!

the only comment i wld have is that a matte shade in the crease creates a nice depth that a frost- even in a darker shade- cant match

First I want to say that your makeup in the pictures is GORGEOUS and not over the top/too sparkely, ect. If you want to try a different look, maybe use more medium to darker toned colours. Like maybe a subtle smokey look? I think the use of a lot of light/pale colours is what people were refering to as "frosty" and "sparkely." Just my 2¢.

You are so pretty! I love your technique you are wonderful!
But you did ask for an honest opinion-
So before I give it lets just say the camera magnifies shimmer and people will say things just to be mean and stuff but please understand this is coming from a nice perspective

It is a little shimmery. But thats for MY TASTES

See heres the thing, makeup is art. YOU are the artist. I mean seriously, I don't like blues that much so I don't use them-but on you they look fabulous. I love browns and golds and stuff but on you they may not work. So it's all good.

I would though, LOVE to see some black eyeliner all the way around your eye smudged with some orange eyeshadow to see how your blue eyes pop

You are just stunning all around and if anyone says anything about it - give them the bird and tell them to go to hell

Oh wow, you AND your makeup are gorgeous! I wish I could wear what you wear - but I'm sure even if I tried my application would be nowhere near as good, I am still a novice.

I LOVE the shimmer on you (I am a huge shimmer fan!) and I think it just looks fabulous.

I definitely want to see more of your FOTDs

Hey sweets! I understand where you're coming from -- my eyeshadow and pigment collection is mainly composed of Frosts, Veluxe Pearls, and Lustres. However, I need to invest in non-shimmery shades because using frosty colors over the entire eye isn't where it's at. You're absolutely gorgeous, and I love the looks that you posted (that Dubonnet look is absolutely to die for!!) -- I don't think your colors are over the top by any means (I think that's what probably put those non-makeup ladies off) but I think you and I both can benefit from including non-shimmery shadows into our looks.

MAC actually has a lot of non-shimmery shades, including Matte and Veluxe (not Veluxe Pearl) finishes, and also many Satin and Velvet shades as well. I do think that using some non-reflective shadows in the look is necessary to keep from looking "too much," even if the colors are very bold. Using mattes with shimmers will create depth that you can't get from just using darker colors (and you may not always want to contour with darker colors anyway). For example, even if you're using a darker color in you crease with shimmery shades on other parts of the eye, if it's a shimmer, it will still reflect light and won't create the depth that you would get using a matte color.

I think that overall, the looks you posted could be improved by using a matte color for one part of the eye instead of using frosty shades all over. For example, try using Llama for your browbone to tone down the reflectiveness. Or instead of using a shimmer in the crease, swap for a matte to create depth. Use mattes along with your shimmers, and it will make those shimmery parts look special instead of just having reflection all over your eye.

You're absolutely gorgeous, and I think you will only look better if you mix up your eyeshadow finishes.

I also wanted to say though, not all Frosts are equally shimmery, and that yeah, some of the reflection in your pictures may be exaggerated by flash. With some of the frosty colors, you can apply in a sheer layer and blend very well, and much of the shimmer will disappear (Woodwinked and Blue Brown pigment do that for me). For example, the gray color I'm wearing right now is a Frost finish, but it's not like it's gray with silver in it. It's just gray and is pretty non-reflective. < / babble >

I love them all, you look gorgeous, the colours suit you, and I don't think they're too shimmery! Only things I could say is I'd love to see you in purples! I think they'd look so lush on you, annnd the only photo that looks slightly too much for daytime with both eyes and the lips is the one with the dubonnet lippie, which looks stunning may I add! But you've already know that, so I can't even call it a critisicm =D

I think your pictures are lovely, and you are so cute!

Those pictures look no more or less frosty than a lot of Son_Risa's looks she posts, and you'll never hear someone critisize (sp?) her. Before I get attacked, I'd like to point out how I said I loved the OP's FOTDs

I just don't understand how people draw the line one place for some, and a different place for others.

I'm not gonna follow the "hun u look amazing" trend, but i will say i like the first two pics and all the others i don't care for. the colors don't do anything for you. they all look like silvery and silvery-blue. I think you should just try new colors. Actual colors instead of frosty looking ones.

HeartOfSilver, I respectfully disagree. I find that Sonrisa's looks do not come out that frosty because she always has a matte shadow for some element of the eyes, which adds a lot of dimension, as opposed to using frost all over, which just reflects all over without any depth.
