Travelling With Makeup?

Hi everyone,

So I have a question. I'm hopefully going to Washington DC for the summer (hoping to book my ticket next week) and I'll be gone from June 2nd to August 30th from the UK.

I've never had to fly with makeup palettes before and I'm concerned as to how I should go about it and what to do.

I figured with eyeliners/lipliners/lipsticks/lipglosses etc I'd just buy some pencil cases and stick them in there and put them in my suit case as they'd be okay. I also have a brush roll for my brushes so that would be fine to go in my suitcase too. But how should I do my palettes? I'm only allowed one suit case unless I decide to pay for a second and I plan on doing shopping while there so I figure the 2nd is going to be inevitable. However my carry on is my laptop and I don't have a backpack I can put it in. Just a typical laptop bag. My digital camera and cables etc are all going to be in there as well so it doesn't leave any room for my palettes.

I know I'm taking a huge risk by putting everything in there, but I don't know what else to do? Or how I would pack them to go in?

Any ideas? I would really appreciate it.

TIA

*Also I apologize if this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move it.*

Can I suggest- put all of your makeup in your suitcase EXCEPT for your palette(s). Palettes are fortunately very slim so I think you'll be ok to fit them in your laptop case or even your purse. I'd really suggest wrapping them once or twice in bubble wrap (held together by a little tape). I don't know if you have the large 15-pan palettes or the small ones, but you also may want to take some tape and run it alone each row of shadows and tape them down so that they don't bounce within the case

i always take my shadows in hand luggage and the rest in my case. i do what Baci suggested - wrap it in bubblewrap but i also put a layer of tissue inside the palette for a bit of extra protection

this is a better idea instead of tape on the inside.

tissue or cut a piece of bubble wrap the same size as the whole palette itself and just put it inside of the palette

don't mess with the tape

I would suggest you try to find a larger bag for your carry-on. The allowed size lets you bring something quite a bit larger than a laptop bag.
Besides, it's generally a good idea to have a few basic items in your carry-on luggage on longer flights, just in case. It's not fun to arrive and not have a clean shirt to change into, because suddenly your bag is coming on the next flight or whatever.

I carry my palettes and brushes (not spoolies, spatula or anything pointy) in my hand luggage too. Tissue inside over shadows and tape the outside. And they've fared well everytime.

Everything else, I categorize in ziploc bags and then put in 1 makeup bag in my regular luggage.

Some airlines do allow you to take a laptop bag in addition to your carry-on, so that would be worth checking out. If not, then definitely look at using (or borrowing) another bag as suggested - your laptop should be fine in a backpack or similar as long as it has a little bit of cushioning (just throw some spare clothes for the flight in there).

I would definitely go with everyone's recommendations so far to take the palettes in your carry on & pack everything else. In any case, you're limited in terms of how much liquid product (foundation, lipgloss, etc) you can take in your hand luggage.

Lastly, don't be tempted to pack too much makeup. I used to be guilty of taking everything bar the kitchen sink, but these days I've learned to be more minimal. Pack only the basic products you'll wear on a day-to-day basis and then just throw in 1-2 items (e.g. a bright lipstick, a smokey eye colour) to wear for evenings out, etc. And multi-tasking products are your friend! My favourites are Bare Study Paint Pot (can be an eye primer or a shadow for a neutral eye), Stila Convertible Colours (blush & lip colour), powder foundations (use as foundation or setting powder), ELF's bronzer & blush duo, and Shroom eyeshadow (doubles as eyeshadow or face highlighter).

I carry my palettes and blushes with me and the rest in the check-in luggage. Like baci and LMD84, I also place a tissue inside the palette.

what's funny is too many girls here in the US think MAC is too expensive...hahaha. The irony is that it's the cheapest cosmetic brand (tied with clinique) sold at any department store

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I'm going to have to buy a backpack or something I guess that will carry my laptop, cables, camera, blackberry cables etc and palettes/brushes. This is gonna be a fun thing to find. I don't like breaking the bank for something I'm only using once, but I also don't know anyone who would have one I could borrow, especially for 3 months. Sigh.
