True Or False (And why?)

Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Please put true or false in your reply and explain why

Everyone should be REQUIRED to work a job in retail, as a waiter/waitress, or any other form of customer service.

My honest opinion, TRUE.

True. Maybe then people will realize that there is much more to my job than they seem to realize. Let them make $3.90 an hour and then get stiffed a few times because their food took to long....when it's completely not their fault.

I'll say false because at the time many of my friends were working in retail or serving in restaurants I was working as a scientist developing medical diagnostics which had a very beneficial effect on the people they were for (mainly diabetics and those with high cholesterol). I would have helped people less by working in retail or serving in a restaurant.

Now for my second reason (please excuse me while I go off on a rant!);

[rant]I eat out in good restaurants a lot (3-4 times a week) and have occasionally had service from people who are clearly unsuited to the role. A couple of weeks back at a well known Italian restaurant in London I asked for the liver I ordered to be cooked very very rare (blue as we say in England). My friend wanted liver too and ordered it rare. When the two plates arrived, the server asked which of us was having the rare and which the well done. My friend said she was having rare. I told the server that I'd ordered very rare. She looked at the one she'd previously described as well done and said "Ah, OK" and put it in front of me. It was almost cremated but by the time I'd cut into it she'd already vanished. I called her back and said "I ordered very rare and this is very well done". Her reply was "Well, that's what was sent". When I said "It doesn't matter what they sent, it's what I ordered that's important" she still didn't offer to replace it. It was only when I explicitly stated that she had to take it back to the kitchen and bring what I'd actually ordered that she did anything and then only grudgingly. There was never an apology for that or other problems (which were numerous) with service that night. She was simply not cut out to be working with customers. She was clearly getting nothing out of the experience and neither were we.[/rant]

[PS rant]Servers here in the UK generally must be paid the national minimum wage of $9.50 per hour regardless of any tips paid by customers. Tipping in the UK is usually 10-12% of the total cost of the meal and it doesn't have to be paid to the serving staff (the restaurant may keep it). In this case we paid the exact amount and left no tip because the service was so poor.[/PS rant]

false, because i think there's other ways of stressing how important these people are. i've never been rude to a cashier/waiter, but i never really thought about it until recently. in my english class we're doing these 'this i believe' informal essays, and the one my teacher had for example was called 'be cool to the pizza dude.' my teacher gets off track really easy...and for about 45 minutes all we did was talk about how unfairly these people get treated, when it's not their fault if something goes wrong and honestly? we couldn't survive without them.

so i say false, but that doesn't mean i believe anybody should have the right to be rude.

even if it's only for a month in high school, yes. i do agree with that.

but then i think people should complete a course before being allowed to sign up for internet service too...in my dictatorship, things are very weird

Hmm...this is an interesting question. On the one hand, I want to say true, because, coming from one who has worked quite a lot in customer service while going through college, you really realize how hard it is once you do it. In that sense, it's definitely a "don't judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes" kind of thing. On the other hand, some people just aren't cut out for customer service. Not that it's a bad thing, but there is a lot of pressure in some retail and food service jobs that not everyone can deal with (for one reason or another, like they would never stop blaming customers and not themselves for the difficulty of the work), in my opinion, and for those people I don't think it would change their attitudes towards those in the customer service industry. So, yeah, I'm on the fence, but it's definitely something to think about!

Having worked in retail and as a server I am quite tempted to say TRUE! I say this because many people tip soooo poorly and they don't realize that a server is often making $2 or $3 per hour. So many times I would serve a party of like 18-run myself into the ground to keep them happy and then get nothing or a paltry tip of like $10 on a large check. This happens to everyone-not just poor servers. I have seen this happen to the best servers-people far better at it than me.

Many people look down on those working in customer service and treat them accordingly. That is so sad. There are people working hard to put themselves through college, etc. and its a shame that they are treated that way. I really don't think anyone who hasn't worked in these industries has any idea of how hard it is. For example, as a server there are so many things out of your control-the cooks take forever with the food/cook the wrong thing/cook the right thing the wrong way, etc. and people often take it out on the tip no matter how much you try to make things right for them.

But there is also this to consider:

and also this which is very true!:

So now I'm torn!
