I've been lurking here for a couple days. And after trying out some of the tutorials, using my drugstore equivalents of the colours I've realized I'm not getting the same effect. Even though I'm not that good technically I know it's because the products I'm using aren't as good.
So as a 14 yr old with very little money LOL. I was hoping you could give me some tips no what MAC products to buy first. I'm mostly into the eyes. I love off the pigments and eyeshadows. And I have relatively dark skin (west indian).
I'm most likely going to get the UDPP. But what colours should I get to start me off in terms of shadow? And I was hoping to buy this brush set. Because as I mentioned before I'm low on money and I really don't want to put $25 into brushes that I would rather spend on shadows/pigments. So this is the one I was thinking of getting.

Also, what's a really good concealer/foundation that will help hide all my pimples?

I really hope to build up my MAC/Sephora collection so I really appreciate any advice you could give me on products that are a MUST!

Im not overly good with this kind of thing (not knowing the skin tones etc) but i would first of all decide what type of foundation you want. Powder/cream? Liquid? I prefer powdery types, I find them longer wearing/easier to blend. So i would recommend Mac studio tech --

How ever I was able to order a sample of mac's liquid foundations by phoning them, you could try that! I think you need to find one you feel comftable with before parting with ya cash! And get one professionally matched up so your not mix-matched coloured

I think purples would look great on your colour (if im imaginging right)
Beautiful iris blended ito satalite dreams would be a pretty/smokey look. I'd say my 'must haves' though are shroom, barecanvas paint, bare study paint pot, vanilla pigment ^_^ HTH

Jewel tones look fabulous on West Indian skin tones. So go for colours that look very rich, and are on the darker side. Beautiful purples, teals, and cranberry colours will all look awesome on you. I totally agree with Ithica on her must haves although you may need something darker for your neutral looks.

You are going to look beautiful in bold shades - definitely deep teals & golds &purples. You definitely NEED Teal pigment

Try to get a sample before buying the whole jar though. A sample will last you about 30 uses. Goldmine e/s (gold). Satellite Dreams e/s (purple).

For starters, you definitely need a base. You mentioned getting UDPP &that's perfect! And/or try the MAC paint pots! You also need a basic highlight color... as Ithica said, Shroom would be great for you... or Ricepaper or Nylon.

I don't own any Sephora brushes so I can't tell you personally how good they are, but I've heard they are pretty good. That kit looks like a great starter collection, especially for the price!

Omg thank you so much for your great advice on colour. Definitely agree on the Jewel tones. I've always found I look great in purple, orange, and deep blue shirts lol.

And I'm also happy you think the brush kit is okay

This is kind of off-topic.. but you can try to buy some Milani shadows or NYX single shadows instead of buying all MAC. They're drugstore brands but they're very pigmented and have great color payoff. I think some of their colors are dupes/near dupes or some of the MAC colors. HTH!

I've never used Sephora brand brushes but if you're looking for a cheaper alternative to MAC, I rec the Sonia Kashuk for Target line. The new black handled contoured brushes are so great! The quality is good, they feel great in the hand and they hold up really well. I have about 7 or 8 of them (I'm a brush whore). Currently there is a limited edition set at Target that has 5 brushes (Blush, fluffy e/s, crease blender, angled e/s, and brow brush/lash comb) in a skakeskin print case for $30. Seperately the brushes are usually $9-20. HTH!

If you are on a budget, try Milani e/s. They are pretty good, as far as pigmentation, and have a good selection of colors.

I'm not sure what stores you have in Canada, but Milani is available at certain Walgreens, and I believe also certain CVSs and Walmarts? The problem is not every place carries it or the whole line, so you have to hunt around. I am currently on a hunt for their blushes/ powder mosaic things

Definitely get the Vanilla pigment sample (lovely highlighter)... What part of the West Indies are you from? I am from the region too.

I haven't been able to find Milani in Walmarts but I have found them in the other stores mentioned. You can also get NYX from their site http://www.nyxcosmetics.com or you can get them for cheaper at http://www.cherryculture.com. If you want to look at NYX colors in person, email NYX Cosmetics with the postal codes near you or where you shop in and they could tell you if there are any stores near you, or even in Canada in the first place.

EDIT~~
If you order from cherryculture, you might wanna check to make sure they ship outside of the US. Forgot to check on that.

My mom has some NYX cosmetics (the eyeshadow trios), and I must say they are nice. The price is right, too, for experimentation ^_^.

I have a number of Sephora brushes, and I like all of the ones that I have. My favorite is the concealer brush. I don't know why, but it just seems to be the right combination of softness and firmness, so that the concealer goes on just right. I think that kit would be perfect for you, but would suggest a lip brush, as well. Definitely not something you need immediately, though, so take your time.

Here's the link of the lip brush that I use:

(It says that it's out of stock online, but in person I found them. I really like that the handle is also a lid, so it can be thrown in a bag with no worries)

NYX is the way to go if you want cheap. Some shades are close to MAC eyeshadows. They have tiny little vials of pigments which are pretty good as well. If you're anywhere near downtown Toronto, certain Rexall/Pharmaplus stores carry NYX. I actually stopped by the Bay & College store today and they just re-stocked the NYX shadows. The Rexall in Atrium on Bay at Yonge & Dundas has them as well as the store at Yonge & Eglinton.
If you go on to the Canadian NYX website, they list all the stores that carry it. You can also order online.
