What are the rules re: eye shadow textures?

I have been hearing alot of that too much shimmer in your eye shadow is a bad thing - meaning you should not use all pearl shadows, etc. Some say that matte shadows are necessary with pearl, frost, etc. How do you feel? Personally, do you agree one way or another? Is there a norm? For example, matte shadows for lids and highlighting, and shimmer for the crease? I love my VP shadows, and the matte shadows don't interest me in the least. Should I be forcing myself into buying at least a few mattes? Geeze, I hope this is making sense. Reading it back, it's clear as mud!

I think you should use whatever works for you. Some people don't like a lot of shimmer/frost because it tends to settle into fine lines. I'm usually less concerned about texture than I am about color but I still prefer to keep my super-sparkly stuff for evenings out.

I think a lot of times it's nice to break up the shimmer with some matte color, in the crease for instance. Other times add a little something to matte shades with a shimmer eyeshadow.

Shiny eye shadows make small lines around the eyes show up more. Older people tend to prefer Matte's more because that texture eye shadow doesn't highlight eye wrinkles. At only 24 i'm starting to see lines around my eyes so i don't use real shiny ones on the inner corner.(Sometimes Veluxe Pearls do this to me) Anyone can probably use any texture of eye shadow, they just have to find the proper placement for it on their eye.
Mixing matte's and shimmery eye shadows gives an eye look some depth to it. You should definately try a couple.

Keep in mind that anything that shimmers, sparkles or shines is meant to draw your eye.

As pumpkincat said, women who are older usually like matte colors because they tend not to highlight their flaws, whereas younger women and girls have an easier time getting away with shimmers and glitters.

If you're going for a more simplified look, you can use mattes as a base, or in the crease, and a more shimmery color on your browbone as a highlight, or on the center of your eyelid, to create depth.

But as far as rules, I think a lot of folks would say there are no rules, except that you should wear what you're comfortable with. Personally, I tend to wear more muted matte colors during the day, and spice it up with my shimmers for going out at night.

I say, whatever you wear, just rock it! It'll look fabulous!

Good gracious little lady! You are 24 and see lines....come on! I am 33 and can honestly say I have narry a one line around my eyes. I don't care what anyone says about age or anything else...mattes are absolutely horrid to me in any way, shape, or form! I love frosty/sparkly shadows, I love glimmery cheeks (al la skinfinishes) and by all means I MUST wear frosty lipsticks. And although a little heavier than I was at 22, I am still hot and will not wear "matte" colors until my 8 year old daughter puts me in an assisted living home (because I got that good insurance not to go to the "old folks" home) and I can no longer apply it myself! Glitterly/Sparkly momma till I die!!! (That shit is written in my will.....okay, well not really...but I am thinking about it!)

I think that sometimes people think that shimmer/glimmer/glitter is more associated with adolescents... I too have not a whole lot of interest in mattes; I personally believe that it's all in the application. For instance, my favorite e/s formla are lustres, but I apply them on the light side so that they don't look too over the top. Maybe try more satin or velvets?

I'm 21 and I don't have any problem about the shimmer/frost e/s in fine lines. But I do personally think that you should try to have a matte on the eye somewhere (at least in the crease). Because the whole purpose is to contour the eye. You can't contour w. a shimmer because it will reflect the light and defeat the purpose. Most FOTD's that I really like or are very artistic have used different finishes in the same color (like a lt.green matte w. a lt.green frost both in outer crease--same for on lid, inner crease etc.) IMO if you really like the allover shimmer look you should try using a neutral matte or (just a matte shade of the same color your using ) in the crease first then you can add the shimmer/frosty on top just blend the two and you will still get the shimmer but w. the contouring effect. If your just going for a fun look don't really care about the "technical" part then go for the all over shimmer have a ball with it! In the end, you should do what your most comfortable with anyway because if not it's not worth being unhappy with your m/u but you "technically" did the right thing on application!
