OK heres the deal-
This professor is amazing. He has freaking bent over backwards for me, already has done so much for me its not even funny. He's just a great guy. He's done so much for me, helped me out when I had surgery everything.

I really want to do something nice for him at the end of the semester.

I know he loves University of TN. He's a football fanatic.

But I don't want to cross any professional lines for him either.

What can I do?

Just not a M·A·C gift card

On the subject of cards, the Swiss Card is really great as a gift. If you shop around you should be able to get one for a lot less - there are lots listed here on Froogle. Avoid eBay, there are lots of fakes coming out of, yes you guessed it, China.

I think the jersey/giftcard is a wonderful idea but maybe, give it to him AFTER you get the final grade from the class. This way, even if other people find out, they can't really say anything about favoritism or impropriety.

Also, writing a letter of commendation to the administration is always a great idea, IMO. These letters, both complaints and commendations, actually stay in the teacher's CV folder and are often "revisited" when they are going for tenure or promotion. Oh, and make sure you cc the letter to the professor. Some of these "mysteriously" disappear when they get to the admin! I've experienced twice where I didn't send a copy to the teachers and the admin just said they didn't receive anything

At the end semester, I would write thank you notes to every professor I liked and learned something from. I did the same thing for my department when I graduated; I didn't want to look like I was kissing butt for better grades, because I knew that I'd have most of the same professors again and again. I think everyone really appreciated those.

As for gifts, a few professors I had I did do that for. I gave bamboo, because it's pretty, fairly easy to keep, and it's a good luck symbol. I like symbolic gifts.
