What happens when you return something?

I got a brand new lipglass in the mail from Mac.com yesterday, and I can tell by looking at it that it's not going to work for me. So here's the question, if I go through the pain in the butt of mailing it back & exchanging it, are they just going to toss it? It seems like I'd heard that they do. I can see why they would, because they have no way of knowing if I tested it or not, and for health reasons that makes sense. However, if they're just going to throw it away, I'd rather do something else with it so at least somebody got some use out of it! So does anyone know what they do with returns? Thanks everyone!

I'm pretty sure they do just toss them =(. Just bc I know a lot of people won't return to MAC bc in the long run it makes their prices go up--not to mention it's a pain in the butt for you. But you know, if you call them, maybe they can tell you for sure. Try to swap it on MUA for somethin you want, though.

Yes they toss returns...

VV, I dont think so. I think the timelimit is 30days, but it never hurts to give them a call and ask...

Returns . . .

Mac tosses returned stuff but other stores do not. I've received clearly USED and opened items from Sephora.com several times.

I wonder if Mac MA sometimes just keep the stuff that would be tossed for themselves. Would that be breaking a rule? It's just such a waste.

All MAC counters are supposed to damage out every return. Occasionally, if they know you, it's a product they can see that it hasn't been touched, and they might need the inventory, it will go back to sell...but this is very rare.

No, the SA's cannot help themselves to returned products (damages). When you return something, it is rung through the register, which enters it back into inventory. Then every week or so, damages are scanned out of the store by the Inventory Control staff (that's what Nordstrom calls them, I'm sure they have other names elsewhere). Then they are shipped back to the company and the store is given a credit of that amount (at the price they paid) with the cosmetic company, which increases the buyer's "open to buy" amount.

It may look casual from the outside of the counter, but it's strictly controlled. If damages disappear, your error rate at inventory time goes up. If your error rate goes up too high, people at your counter will need to be updating resumes.

Maybe they should have a seal on the boxes, that way they can atleast put back something to sell if the seal isn't broken?

A few days ago i noticed there was a blush in my Mac bag that i didn't ask for so a couple of hours after buying it i told them and got my money back. I wonder if that was thrown away aswell because that's even worse than if i'd bought it and changed my mind. I think the seal thing would be a good idea particularly for cases like this? Mac MA themselves sometimes give you the wrong shade, as in they read the name or number wrong.

The procedure may be different between counters (where the inventory is owned by the department store) and M·A·C standalones where it's owned by M·A·C. The stated requirement for all situations though is that "Any merchandise that is returned should not be placed back into inventory. This helps prevent any product from being tampered with and resold". I've once returned an eyeshadow to a standalone that was included in my haul by mistake (someone else must have left it sitting by the till) and as I already had two pans of it (Trax) I returned it for a refund. When I got back home I discovered it had worked its way back into my bag again along with a concealer I hadn't bought and the rest of the day's purchases. It seems I got given my own return back as well as someone else's as neither was on the till receipt. I decided it was too much trouble to try to return things a second time!
