What Have I DONE?!

I found this dog, A cute little boston terrier. he was fat , but in fairly poor condition.

He had outrageous tapeworm issues.. I de-wormed him.
He was infested with fleas. .. his toenails were very long ,and he was the dirtiest little dog I have ever seen

So I cleaned him up, clipped his nails. De-wormed him., and was preparing to put some Advantage Flea drops on him..

The owner called. I went to return the dog and I voiced my concerns about the fleas and tapeworms.

I simply said "He had really bad tapeworm, and he is incredibly infested with fleas , which means hes going to get tapeworm again"

She said.. "oh thats ok hes just an outside dog anyways"

and

"he usually gets out when my kids leave the gate open"

Oh and
"Wow You bathed him" was the first thing she mentioned.. so obviously the dog was dirty before it escaped.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? this little dog is outside only? and you dont even care enough to treat him for his parasites?!! and hes gotten out before? uughhh..

I feel terrible for this little guy. I wish I would have kept him but I can't legally keep someones dog. so I returned him..
I am a huge animal lover and I feel really bad right now. Here In southern california it doesn;t get that cold at night. but In the valley where he Lives it gets to be about 25 degrees at night. And thats too cold for a little dog to be sleeping outside.

I hope I did the right thing... I feel as if I did the right thing for the owner for returning their property but I did the wrong thing for the dog, Returning it to a home where no one cares for it.

If you think they are mistreating him, you can always call the humane society or something. Don't they have those animal cops? And they can go over and see what's going on. If they neglect the dog like that, why on earth would they want to keep him? Maybe you should of offered to keep him.

I know. My dad also told me to contact the humane society , Althought I dont think there is much they can do, considering they do feed the dog.. and as far as I know they don't beat him...they just let him sit outside infested with fleas and contracting tapeworms without bathing him or attending to his feet.. .. ughhh gross.

if you think the poor thing is having that much problems you call animal conrol on the lady, they should be able to get you in touch with the people you need, because if she is letting her pet live like that (which is really, really bad if you ask me) think about what her house and kids are like as well espically if he has gotten out alot

or can call and ask a vets office about what all you can do (if you see him out again I would sugest taking him to the vets, because then you have somebody else say what was wrong and it would be a he says she says type thing with one word against the other and could help get the poor thing away from the people that treat him that way)

call animal control. allowing parasites etc to that extream to take over the dog that is a sign of animal abuse.

That dog needs you.

But yet you did the right thing by returning it. You saw it's condition it lived in, you saw the lady you know.

It would be the wrong thing to not call animal control.

if you feel uncomfortable doing that i agree with the above-ask your vet what to do.

and very rarely do i put such a blatent what to do but i can't help it. I to am an animal lover.

you're doing the right thing.

i can't stand to see animals suffer because their owners don't care for them. animal abuse is not limited to not feeding or beating a pet.

Definitely call! I think they will do something about it. Even if they are feeding him and not beating him they are still abusing him and the authorities will agree with that.
I would have just said "Sorry lady, I don't believe he is yours."
God I hate people that mistreat animals! I wish we could force her to be infested with fleas and a tape worm, the scum bag!

I agree.. Some people really shouldnt own animals... at all.

THey didnt put up lost dog posters..

It took them 2 days to even call the humane society..

They knew exactly when he got out. Halloween Night... but did they look for him?he was so fat he was NOT a fast dog. he would have been really easy to find especially since he was only found a few streets over.

They said That there isn't much they can do Legally. seeing as how the animal doesn't have any physical signs of neglect.

Your first thing to do is to tell them the exact physical symptoms of neglect and then ask if parasites is not considered negligence

I know i'm sounding bitchy right above the PS i just am one of those OCD'ers who will drive people like Animal control crazy until I get my way LOL

haha oh believe me Im the same way. especially when it comes to animals Im going to call again tomorrow and ask some more questions.. haha

even though he's being fed, he's still neglected, because tapeworm can kill a dog, they're letting him go untreated, it's animal abuse. i hate that "legally" all it takes is food and water to get away with that shit.

i hate when people have pets just for the sake of having them, when they don't give a damn either way. the only reason i ignore my dog is because he hates me. but i play with him, bathe him, walk him, and feed him, and if he got out or ran away or got hurt i'd be completely devastated.
