What sort of gifts do you buy for people you barely know?

A girl who I've known since pre-school invited me to her birthday dinner yesterday, we've only really been talking on and off for the last few months so thinking of a gift to buy for her isn't so easy. I know I don't strictly have to buy her one, but I think it's just polite and a sort of thanks :] Not chocolates, flowers or bathroom bits and bobs, because I think they're a bit overdone. Any help would be appreciated!

Be thoughtful ^_^. From what you know about her what do you think she likes? Is she a wild person xD? Party girl? Shy? She likes to read? What does she do for a living? Any hobbies you know of?

Books are great for gifts, romantic books, cooking books, mystery. I personally like it when people give me easy to do cook and baking books. How about simple jewelry? A cute locket and braclet. Some OPI nail polishes LOL, i love it when my friends buy me those for my birthday. How about something cute for her apartment? Many many many gifts you can give people ^^ even if you know very little about them.

Or you can get her a gift card from any store, i know river island and new look sell gift cards, Debenhams and La Senza as well.

I would do a gift card for a mani/pedi. Whenever I give those out as gifts, people go wild over them.

Thanks so much for your help everyone! I'm getting her the UD Foreshadow palette because there are three neutrals and one blue-green (her favourite colour to wear in clothes), a pretty neck scarf (she always compliments mine haha) and some Accessorize jewellery :]
