Dear Reader,

My name is Sophia, I'm a new member I need of some help.

I went for a job interview last week at a rather prestigious depatment store near to wear I live. I have fond memories of my Mother and I shopping there when I was a child. It has always been somewhre I'd like to work while I study..

My first job interview went really well but then one of the managers asked me what I was wearing, at first I thought she ment my parfum, but she ment my makeup. I told her that I don't wear makeup and I was told that it's essential to look my best, I would be given a two week trial before getting the job. I asked one of the girls who I was already friendly with and she told me that you are told to wear makeup, it doesn't matter what but you have to look good. I am always well groomed that part is fine but the makeup is hard.

I don't wear makeup but I'd like to. I've always been how should I say it "bookish" maybe? I lacked any real confidence to wear it myself and I'm hoping now will be the time to change. Could you give me some advice as what I should try and what each thing is for? I need everything and the brushes too, I have no makeup at home only lip balm.

I'm not sure what information you would need to help me so please feel free to send me a message. I am in my early 20s I have an ivory pallor and I like it so no bronzing products or tints. I have green eyes and dark hair short hair. I am shy? But if a photograph is needed I will put one up. I'm not fussy on price, I'm quite comfortable financially. Last thing before I end there is a gentlemen I know socially who works there to, I really like him and would like to make a good impression.

Hi Sophia and welcome!

You can start with virtually anything you like, but for an office environment, I'd suggest getting yourself a good set of neutral shadows. Mac and Inglot will let you build your own quads and other brands have them available as part of their permanent collections.

If you're not used to makeup, I'd suggest a fairly lightweight foundation or tinted moisturizer (an associate at a beauty counter can help match your skin and, if you'd like some recommendations for brands, there is a discussion thread here on foundations for porcelain beauties such as yourself).

I'm not sure if you'd also be expected to wear lipstick, but I'd suggest starting with a fairly subdued one- like something close to the colour of your own lips but a little more intense- and, if you'd like, get yourself a deeper one for an evening out or when you're feeling daring.

A lot of what you'll "need" will actually be determined by your budget. There are drugstore brands that have cheap product, or you can go all the way up to prestige names like Chanel and Guerlain.
